$30 sitter rate for 2 kids?

Anonymous
Just trying to gauge whether this rate proposed for babysitting 2 kids is reasonable. FWIW, this would be our nanny, and we would pay her in cash, so I think her take-home pay for sitting is perhaps more than what she gets from nannying (based on rough calculations). Maybe that's reasonable because she's working outside of normal business hours, and of course we would feel more comfortable leaving our kids with her as compared to a random sitter we find. Do others think this is in the range of what's market?

Absolutely yes. So honestly since she’s an employee, you might even have to pay her time and a half which might end up being more than $30.

Sounds cheap assuming if she's your full time nanny it should be paid at time and a half overtime rate.

If she's your nanny and working 40 hours you should pay her time and a half.

OP. It hadn't even occurred to me that this is overtime. I had been thinking of it as separate work she does for various clients during weekends, particularly as she gets paid in cash for sitting. Thanks for the feedback.

OP, I'm a full-time nanny for one family and work for others for ad-hoc evening care. Totally fine to pay her in cash for the ad-hoc times if you both agree. I've been doing this for 15+ years, file taxes every year, and never had an issue so not worried about it at all. As far as the rate, I charge my employers less because evening care for me is so much less work than the typical day-to-day of regular weekday care so I guess it depends on what works best for you two. For context, my pay is $25/$1,000 every 4 weeks and for ad-hoc evenings I charge $20 with a 4hr min.

It is not fine even if she agrees because it is illegal. This is OP's full time nanny, and legally, all time over 40, hours must be paid as overtime of 1.5 hourly pay. Stop cheating the person who takes care of your most valuable possession!

Plus 1. I charge same for day/night. It is still your time. Do not short change yourself.

How could it possibly be anything other than overtime? The law is really clear.

This.
She can work for OTHER people on the weekends for whatever pay she negotiates. But for you, OP, it’s illegal for you to hire her to work for you over 40+ hours unless you are paying overtime.

Children aren't possessions.
