| How prestigious is the UCSB RMP program? I know about RSI and it is incredibly helpful in getting into the T5 colleges. But it is free. With UCSB RMP at $12,000 won't it be considered a sign of privilege? Or is it still very helpful in college admissions? |
| Not prestigious enough that I know what most of those acronyms mean. |
| What is it? |
Are you referring to the UCSB summer research mentoring program that used to be called the summer research for talented HS students? Are you sure about that price? It used to be considerably cheaper. The admit rate is very low - now only 4-6 % so it is a good experience for your DC to apply but prepare them for possible disappointment unless they are an outstanding student. Our DC did it in STEM subject - it does appear to be well regarded compared to many summer university programs at elite schools that are just revenue collections . It requires a highly competitive admission process similar to college applications and has an extremely low staff to student ratio with close supervision. If accepted, the students are matched with many top researchers in various fields that they express interest in. The quality of the research done is astonishing for HS students. The experience itself was excellent for preparing for college life. I don’t think that it is anywhere near as important as grades or test scores for college applications but it could help to show demonstrated interest in whatever major your DC will be applying for. Mostly, doing the program was a terrific and fun experience on a beautiful campus that is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean on three sides. Our DC is now doing post grad research at am extremely well regarded place. So it definitely did not harm prospects. |
