Has anyone had a D&C in their OB office? I found out yesterday at 6 weeks that I have a blighted ovum (was pretty much expecting it due to HCG levels). Sac is only measuring 5+1 so not large at all. I’ve done misoprostol in the past for a 7 week and 9 week loss and hated every part of it. My OB offered a D&C in office next week and said that it’s extremely quick and considering I’m measuring so small, it will be easy. Has anyone gone through this? If so, how was the process, pain etc.? |
I have -- it was not great (needle in the cervix, yowch), but I wanted a local rather than general anesthesia (I'm a barfer), and it was fast.
Once it was over, I didn't have much/any discomfort |

PS I'm sorry you need this |
I haven't, but all 3 times I've had a D&C I've bled out to the point of almost needing a blood transfusion, so I personally would rather do it in the hospital.
As someone with recurrent pregnancy loss, I'd encourage you to look into reproductive immunologists. REs and OBs really can't help once the basic tests come back negative. I'm just starting the process but we've already identified multiple immunology reasons that I lost pregnancies. |
OP, I'm sorry you are going through this. I don't know your particular situation, but a D&C may not be necessary. My understanding is that pregnancies that end prior to 9-10 weeks do not need one by default. I had a blighted ovum that read at roughly the same stage as yours and my Dr. recommended I wait. I ended up naturally miscarrying at 9 weeks after my last period. I think OBs often recommend D&C for psychological, rather than physical reasons for early pregnancy loss. Which is 100% valid, but if you are not in significant psychological distress, you may opt to wait. |
This was from October so hopefully it’s resolved by now. |
