Moving to a new neighborhood with a long pool waitlist

Anonymous
My kid is a year-round swimmer, 9 yo, not the fastest but a hard worker, and very coachable. We are contemplating a move to a different neighborhood about 45 minutes away but the two pools that are closest are known for having epic waitlists to get in. Is there any way to get preference, or do people just suck it up and wait? We really like our summer pool but driving to daily practices there is impossible. Honestly this is the biggest hurdle to us moving - our lifestyle otherwise would greatly improve by having more space and better schools.

At our pool, you really have to wait. I'd go ahead and get on the waitlist right away.

+1 Katie Ledecky wasn't able to gt into ours in time! (There was a WSJ article on it.) So you can't jump the line for being a good swimmer.

Tbh this is an impediment to our moving as well.

If he is swimming year round why not do club in the summer?

Omg - why would you get to skip the line?

Just put your name on the list as soon as possible. It may go faster than normal.

Get in line, maybe you'll get an August membership. Maybe there's a way to do camp that allows your kid to still swim.

Our pool waitlist was 10 years last I heard. But I think we allow people to have a limited membership if they join the swim team.

At many pools around here, memberships can convey with the house (for a fee, but you avoid the waitlist). So the key would be to buy from someone who is already a member. It’s definitely a perk listing agents highlight for the more popular pools.

I’d contact the pools directly and ask about the swim team and ask if memberships convey with house sales.

Then expand your search. Maybe the 2 closest pools have waitlists but one a little further doesn’t?

We have a 5 year waitlist and there are definitely people who think they can skip for having a good swimmer. Sorry, nope. Not how it works.

Found the social climber with a slow and crappy swimmer.

Says the person who doesn't understand summer swim.

Our pool does not have a waitlist for HOA members. It only has a waitlist for outside memberships. Check your pool to see if that’s the same set up. The waitlist for nonmembers at our pool is about 2 to 3 years.

Getting a membership preference for your 9yo? Unless they're a phenom - no.

My kids are little so no, I don’t understand summer swim. I can learn. You are too old to learn how to not be rude.
