Getting makeup done at Sephora

Anonymous
I need makeup done for an event. When people say get it done at Sephora, do you make an appointment or just drop in? Do you pay for it? I don't really need to buy new makeup right now, but don't mind buying a couple of things if that's expected if it's not a paid service.

I wouldn’t get it done there. I’ve tried twice and it was beyond horrid in actual light.

You have to make an appointment because they are often booked if course there’s a price! There’s no such thing as free make up application anymore. This isn’t 1997!

Get your hair done but do your own makeup unless you’re willing to hire someone who usually does weddings. Light makeup is much better than bad makeup.

I would go with a much smaller place that works with a freelancer or just a freelancer.

I like this one:

Or Carl Ray for lessons

But it is going to be more than $60!

I did a Sephora full face appointment in hopes of updating my products and techniques. I was disappointed. I'm not sure if the salespeople at Sephora really know more than the average consumer. I'd try one of these other services.

Do make-up counters like Clinique still do this? I feel like before pre-pandemic times they would do it for free with the expectation that you buy something. I think I even made an appointment once.

I would only it whith my own makeup. The open stuff at the store is full of some bad germs.

I did it for my engagement photos and received nothing but raving compliments from everyone. It's technically "free" if you buy the required $$ of products they used on your face. I think it was $50 when I did it.

I paid $60 for a full face application at Sephora and it was worth it though it does depend on the skill of the MUA. It's also a good practice to share inspiration pictures and be very clear about the look you want (natural, extra glam, light/heavy makeup, etc). If you're really concerned, just pay $30 for a focus area like your eyes always keeping in mind you'll need to guide the MUA towards your preferences.

Nordstrom does free sessions, have never tried it: https://www.nordstrom.com/browse/beauty/services/in-store

Heaven knows what you will look like coming out of Sephora -- skills vary wildly. I had a good experience there, but I wasn't going out afterwards or anything. I booked online for an appt at the Tysons Sephora. YMMV.

When I did need makeup for an actual event I used the makeup artist at Salon Nordine at Mosaic. She did an incredible job and years later a friend still talks about how good I looked that night.

It used to be free with a required minimum purchase but now they charge a fee with no required purchase. Agree that the quality of the experience varies widely depending on the MUA.
