Car seats and ubers

How do you guys deal with this?

I need to make a quick Uber trip with my three year old to pick up our car at the shop.

The max speed will be 30 miles per hour. It’s like two miles.

I’m pretty comfortable with the risk without a car seat but will Uber allow that? Or do I really need to lug and install our car seat?

How old? We bought this for a longer Uber while traveling. It is so easy that we use it all the time. Kids can be in the vest before the car arrives and then you buckle pretty much like a normal seat.

The Uber driver will probably say no because it’s illegal. Is there a bus you can take?

The Uber driver won’t care. But I wouldn’t do it.

3 is too young for no car seat. Order an Uber Car seat or bring yours with you. Alternatively leave the three year old with a neighbor and go pick up the car.

I wouldn't trust an Uber driver to drive a child without a car seat.

Just bring the carseat. Its not like you'll have to lug it around everywhere since you're just going to pick up your car. And, you'll need to the carseat to drive the DC home in your car too.

Always car seat. You are in a car with a stranger who may not drive well or have a pure accident.

One of those portable car seats will be better than nothing.

Assuming you are in DC, it's illegal in an uber but legal in a cab. The uber drive may very well not accept you. But a cab will. One time? I'd do it (assuming your car seat isn't home). You can use the Curb app to call a cab.

I had an Uber driver almost turn me down because I was with my kid and he didn't see the carseat next to me when he first pulled up. It takes less than a minute to use the latch to put the carseat in. I have done it tons of times. They are always more willing to wait while you put the seat in than argue with someone who insists her kid doesn't need a carseat.

Second the safe rider vest though if you are willing to buy something.

Or if it is 2 miles away can you not put him in a stroller and walk?

This is what I would do.

I assume the car seat is in the car at the shop, so not worth buying a travel vest or second car seat for a one-off. DCUM will say never ever, but a 5-10 minute trip up the street is low risk to me. Or like PP said, just walk with a stroller.

My worry isn’t that your max speed is 30, but you can’t control other drivers that may hit you. And cars can flip even in low speed impacts.

Yep. I was in a Uber that straight up ran a stop sign. Didn't even see it, just blew right through.
