Young man, aged 20. Didn’t attend college. Has never held a job of any kind, but did once give up on a paid internship after one week. Splits 50/50 living arrangement with mother and father. Drives car father paid for with gas mom pays for. No clue how everything else is paid for, but assume it’s the same. Never outdoors cutting grass or otherwise helping around the house. Not disabled.
What does his life look like in 10 years? |
| Maybe he’ll meet a rich girl with low self esteem, get her pregnant and marry her, then be supported by her family. Or maybe he’ll get in trouble with the law and join the military. Who knows? |
| Zero chance if the parents continue to enable him. 10 year from now things will be exactly the same except he will be 30 which is even less socially acceptable. |
| Is he autistic, any cognitive or mental health issues? It’s hard to answer your question without this knowledge. |
Go back and read the OP. |
I could see this, except for the military part. Most guys like this with enabler parents don't end up joining the military. |
|
In ten years he will be doing the same thing, probably with a video gaming habit.

They have 30 days to get a job and present a plan.
I would try really hard to get them into school and help them secure a government job that isn’t apt to fire him. Have you had the come to Jesus talk where you explain you and his dad won’t live forever and there isn’t an inheritance to support him? |
| Unless he's your kid you should MYOB. |

If you are going to live in this home, you have four choices: military, college, tech school, or job.
You have 30 days to make your choice and 90 days to make it happen. |
I thought it sounded like the writer was “asking for a friend,” or they observed this from the outside (cutting the lawn). |
| Who has a paid internship, but hasn’t attended college? I will tell you—one that mom or dad set up. |
| Sounds like you just haven’t diagnosed him and gotten him treatment. |
OP here and yes, bingo! |
| Why do you care? |
