I know, yet another tipping question.
What do you tip at a non-chain fast casual restaurant where you go to the counter, order on a screen, pick up your food at the counter when it's ready, and bus your own table when done? I tipped 15% and then thought, but why? Is this closer to take out? It's still dining in but I am doing all my own service? Would it be 10%? Genuinely asking. |
| I would not tip at all. |
| I do 10 for this, or 15 if it is a place where I go routinely and they are always very good with customer service. |
| Sometimes I just add a $1.00 |
|
What service did they provide, that is not provided at a fast food chain, for you? You tip for service. Not service: Taking your order, using the register, giving you change, putting your food on the counter, wiping down tables after you are gone. You could argue that cleaning tables is service, but then you should be tipping at fast food as well if you eat in the facility. And they didn't even perform the first three. YOU took your order and did the payment steps.
This tip creep is ridiculous. Stop participating. You basically paid them for you to do the work. |

All the restaurants in my neighborhood like this offer 15/20/25 autotips. 10% isn't even an option. It's ridiculous.
My parents were at a place like this recently, and the tip screen had narratives under each choice -- like 15% had underneath "Some minor problems with service", 20% said "Satisfactory service" and 25% said "Good service". WTF? |
This would anger me. I'd avoid that place. |
|
what are they doing for you? nothing except putting your food in a bag or on a try.
no tip! |
| Nope, no tip |
| $0 and I don't give it another thought. |
|
$0
My kid works at a place like this and he makes $15.25/hr. In a restaurant setting, tipping is for those who make $2.10/hr, and the rest of their wage is supplemented with tips. |
Agreed...these are not tipped positions. I do not tip. I do not tip at the grocery store or the mall. I tip generously at real restaturants. |
|
What service was provided to you?
None, so zero dollars. |
You said it was a non-chain but can you compare it to a chain? This sounds like Panera or Chipotle where tipping is nice but totally unnecessary. I give a couple singles when I have them, but not always even when I do. |
