I’m in consideration for a job that requires 2 days per week in NYC, the rest is remote. I’d really prefer not to uproot my family so thinking through what it might look like to commute and stay in NYC for two days a week. The job is about $100K more than my current salary so figure that would cover the costs involved?
Does anyone do this? What does it look like for you? |
Do you have to pay for travel and lodging yourself? Might get expensive to do they every week.
what time do you need to be in in the morning? |
Train ticket is 300/week and lodging maybe another 300/week (staying one night). Take the 5am Acela and come back next evening. Totally do-able. DC has a great quality of life but the salary progression can be super frustrating. |
Lodging in nyc is now like 500 plus for a midrange hotel |
I would really sit down and figure out the total cost. Ubers to Union Station, paying to park your car, meals, etc. I think your estimate of 600 a week is way under what it will actually cost you. I am not sure if after taxes it is worth the pay increase. |
I know people who've done something similar but they've paid a friend to sleep in a spare bedroom 1x week. |
What do you consider mid-range? I am seeing around $280-320 a night for places I consider mid-range |
Train tickets will be less if you book way ahead too, but figure out if you need to pay NY state tax if your income is being sourced from a NY company. That would make a big difference. |
Also, you could use commuter pre tax $ for Amtrak, which should help with cost. I would find a reliable $150/night hotel if you can. You’ll just be sleeping there. |
If op is in md, ny taxes are actually lower than moco. I was shocked when I moved here from nyc. |
My friend does this, but it's 3-4 nights/week in NYC. He flies the American DCA-LGA shuttle and has a driver lined up for pick up every time and the whole process perfectly timed. He rents a tiny studio instead of getting a hotel. Then they loan it to friends who come up to NYC for a weekend.
He just books economy tickets and ends up upgraded to first class about half the time given his high status with AA, but it's really no difference for such a short flight anyway. |
Are you certain that won't switch to more time in person? |
This is just not true. Both state and local are higher in NY. Also the concern is whether you would have to pay DMV in state tax as a resident PLUS NY state because your income is derived from a NY source. |
It’s not plus it’s one or the other or both 2/5 New York and 3/5 dc. |
The one person I know who does this has no kids (DINK) and they split rent on an apartment in nyc with another couple. |
