Question re middle schools with open positions

Anonymous
Is it expected that middle schools would have their staff hired by now? The MS we are assigned to had a lot of turnover, and lots of the positions appear unfilled. They are missing about 25% of the teachers in core subjects like English, science, and math. Bad sign, right? I can't imagine there are going to be many options at this point for hiring.

What are you basing this on? If you are looking at the web pages or staff directory, those would not necessarily be reflective of new staff members set to start work later this month.

I agree with the PP- teachers who have been hired are not fully transferred within the system and their names do not show up yet on the staff directory.

If you say the school name, we can look it up in Careers to see how many openings there really are.

Within the next week or two, most schools will send out Back to School letters (or emails) that often include a list of new staff members that were hired over the summer.

Thanks, PPs. The zoned school is Silver Creek and yes, I'm comparing the directory with what they had last year, so maybe I'm off.

Silver Creek still needs 1 part time science, a social studies teacher, and a part time art. Not too bad tbh.

That doesn’t sound bad at all - thank you! -OP

I have a colleague who works there and loves working there and loves the principal, fwiw. Great school.

My child goes there and I don’t feel like there was much turnover. The few teachers I know of departing were moving back to hometowns out of state.

Piggy-backing on this thread — it looks to me on the mcps job posting page like my kid’s middle school (Banneker) is still missing two English teachers, a math teacher, a technology teacher, a part-time science teacher, and several paraeducators. How likely is it that those positions will be filled? We dealt with a series of subs for a while last year and I’m hoping we have better staffing this year.

If they are not filled at this point, you are probably heading toward subs. Fingers crossed that at least a couple get filled!

That’s good to know. I was just comparing the staff directory this year with last year’s, and there were some departments that seemed to list quite a few people. I think that is par for the course in MCPS now, with teachers wanting to move around to new schools or new school systems. It doesn’t sound like SCMS had bad management.

Please stop using the word par. There is actually a par program that makes teachers work extra hours on top of their unpaid overtime and gives them no job security or support. If you're not talking about going or giving teachers harsh review processes use a different word. Thanks par for making my life so much more of aa hassle. Thanks admin for misusing par to retaliate on teachers who report true data.

What are you talking about? "Par for the course" is a perfectly fine phrase.

I do hope you're getting therapy for your barely suppressed rage.

Another SCMS parent here. It looks like the website still hasn't been updated. I'm hoping that new teachers have in fact been hired. There are currently only 9 English/Reading teachers listed, vs. 13 last year. There are also only 6 math teachers, vs. 9 last year. Science also has fewer teachers listed this year.
