Is anyone familiar with RMSC MLK?

How are the coaches at this site? Does your swimmer receive good instruction?

What group are you going to be trying out for? How much experience does your child have and what is their age?

I am not OP, BUT, I have a kids who is also interested... DC will be trying out for below 8 and is currently in Advance swimming in Rec lessons.

First PP. My kid is graduating out of this age group and has loved her experience. The coaches are great and “really funny and nice.” (Direct quote from DD.)

I’m not a swimmer but I think she’s gotten good technique and endurance training. I’ve seen improvement each year, and DD seems to be able to tell me what’s gotten stronger. (I say “seems” bc I have had to look everything up after she tells me about it.)

You may want to look at private groups too. Your child is doing great but at nine they go into the juniors and few slots open. It’s hit or miss on if kids get in depending on how many openings which is basically kids leaving vs trying out. And keep trying. It took my slow kid a few times to get in.

I would definitely try out for more than one location if possible. As another PP said, your DD will be trying out for a spot in Juniors which is a competitive group just because of the number of kids who already have spots because they started in the Minis group. Generally MLK has been considered one of the easier locations to get into, but again that’s largely dependent on the number of kids that already have guaranteed spots. We know an MLK Juniors swimmer and they have had a great experience.

Also, try for Olney. Sometimes they have less swimmers trying out because of the location. KSAC and Rockville are the most competitive, near impossible to get in.

Also, when they open up the Silver Spring indoor pool, no one knows what's going on but if they open up an RMSC there, try out then for the first group. Rumor is they are putting the KSAC kids there for a few years to remodel KASAC, but other rumors are they are going to the outdoor pools that got heaters.

Echoing other posters - slower than B and entering RMSC at the juniors level (as opposed to minis) is typically not going to work out.

For the minis it’s usually not too hard to get in. Beware though at MLK the minis group is kind of large so they might not necessarily get a lot of personalized attention.

This seems to have gotten better with the addition of another coach.
