According to the air quality index for the area, there is a high PM 2.5 (particulate matter) in the air due to wildfires in Canada. The index has categorized this as unhealthy for sensitive groups such as children and the elderly. This is unfortunate since the weather is great temperature-wise and I know my DC’s in home daycare likes to get them outside if the weather permits. I’m inclined to share this info about the air quality index but wasn’t sure whether to do it. Is anyone else’s daycare keeping the kids inside due to the poor air quality? |
My kids middle school kept them inside yesterday. |
Stay inside. If you have to go out wear a mask. |
OP here. Messaged the daycare and they said they were going to keep the kids indoors the rest of the week! |
What about weekend activities? Are you planning to be outdoors? |
I think the wind will shift and it’ll be better by the weekend. |
Just how bad is breathing this air?
Is like an hour on the playground like my kindergarten smoking a cigarette?? I have asthma and have been outside walking a bit and don’t feel phased at all. I am often bothered by smells my spouse can’t even sense — but I don’t even smell the woodsmoke. We have been keeping kids inside regardless but wonder if worthr it |
Yes, pretty much. Maybe even equivalent to smoking multiple cigarettes, depending on exactly what the AQI is where you live https://cnycentral.com/weather/breathing-in-wildfire-smoke-comparable-to-smoking-3-to-11-cigarettes-a-day |
Breathe deeply and experience climate change. |
You can track the air quality here- ie your air code.

Maybe next time NY or other people from the U.S. can help put out Canadian wildfires so we don't have this environmental disaster here. |
I mean this is worst carbon emissions disaster I've ever experienced in my lifetime |
Extra people aren’t necessarily helpful. Many of the fires are not controllable by human intervention, and the last century of logging and putting out forest fires has resulted in extremely flammable forests. I’m not an arborist but I think we need to let some fire burn and make sure we’re re-introducing more fire resistant forests in the long term. |
This has been happening on the West Coast for years. For sure it's bad, but it's not new. |
