I don't know my child's IQ - am I a bad parent?

Anonymous
Ok, so I was just reading the post about whether it was more difficult to parent a bright child, and I was amazed that so many posters know their child's IQ. I'm in my early 40's and have never had my IQ tested, so it's never entered my head to have DD's IQ tested either. How do parents get their kids tested, and why? Is it done at school? I was not brought up in the USA so maybe it's an American thing?

It's not an American thing. It's a hyper-competitive parent thing. Don't even bother.

I don't know my kids' IQs, or my own, and have zero interest in knowing them.

Fuhgetaboutit.

The only reason I know my DDs is because we had some testing done as part of a private school application (elementary school level). We did a year of private school and then put her in public school anyway and will not be having our other kids tested.

Not sure why other parents have it done but I'd imagine it's for school testing.

It's a requirement for applying to many (most?) local private schools.

I know mine and my children's. We have an idea of what my husband's is but not the exact number (his parents would not tell). My kids had to be tested for private school admissions. My husband and I were tested in public school for the gifted program. I would not otherwise know, or want to know, about any of us.

Why is it a school requirement?

If you need a test to figure out whether your kid is smart, he's not that smart.

If you want a test to see how smart your obviously smart kid is, the issue is with the parent's vanity.

Intelligence testing is best used for assessing children who may have problems, not to measure how smart a smart child is. Really smart people are outside the range of an intelligence test anyway.

The easiest way to have a successful school is to cherry-pick the smartest students. Anyone can teach really smart children.

I don't know my kid's IQ. I don't think you are a bad parent. Perhaps we both are?

OP, people have their childrn's IQ tested either for entrance to private school, or for entrance to Gifted/Talented programs in a pubic school (in some cases) or as part of a comprehensive evaluation if the child is experiencing learning difficulties. Some kids can be both gifted AND have learning disabilities.

In most cases parents do not just get their kids IQ tested just for the heck of it.

You are certainly not a bad parent for not having your child's IQ tested.

However parents that HAVe had to get an IQ test for the reasons above aren't bad parents, either!

... isn't so terrific when they actually report the score, though.

You think? I don't mind. I actually do see a difference between the kid who has an above average IQ test score of say 125, and once who is up around 145 -- or higher! There is a big difference in the way the two kids think and learn, and it helps me picture the intellectual situation for lack of a better way to describe it. Same thing if parents are talking about their children with mental handicaps/retardation but one has a child with an IQ score of 75 and the other, 55.

22:29 I agree with your point but 125 is not an average score. 100 is average.
