Regardless of if you’ve lived there or have just visited and have a preference - which side of the park do you prefer? Upper West Side or Upper East Side? |
For what? Living? To stay while visiting? To walk around as a tourist? For sights? Dining?
I've been a bunch of times but am far from an expert. To me UWS is a better neighborhood for living or staying in and dining, but UES has more museums and other sights. Last time we stayed in an apartment a few blocks from the park and walked through it to get to the museums. |
UES for living there, UWS for visiting |
Sorry, yes. For living. We're trying to narrow it down because honestly both neighborhoods have apartments that meet our budget and we like both areas so I was just curious what others think - I know a lot of people on this board have spent a lot of time in NYC either living or visiting. |
That's interesting. You say the exact opposite of the poster above you Why do you say that? |
Ues has both private and public schools I like. Feels more residential. I like going to museums as an everyday thing, there are good dining options but I'd have my go-to favorites Uws I can work there, go to meetintogs there, like going to see shows and performers there, shopping and restaurants and bars galore |
I was born on the UES but grew up on the UWS. (Now innDC)
Totally different vibes. Do you have kids? I still think of the UES as more staid, more moneyed, where the private schools are, WASPier,. Quieter, not always easily accessible buy subway (if you are far east). The UWS is a little funkier, more Jewish, has Zabars and Citronella, more liberal. I also really love Riverside Park, so I would pick the UWS if you can afford a nice apt. |
UES has stores by Eli Zabar, who is the son of the founders of Zabar's. It also has Citarella.
I personally prefer UES for the museums and more residential feel. |
I don’t know that much about schools and housing but I vastly prefer UWS for Riverside Park, Central Park, stores, groceries. |
Both are great. You’ll get more for your money on the East side in a modern building. |
Lived on both, and UES |
The 6 has way more uptown stops now and it isn’t so horrible - yay for them! |
Pp: sorry, I meant the Q! That was bugging me because I lived at 96th and 2nd for a while so should’ve remembered. OP, you’ll be happy on either side, but it might be helpful to reach out to your contacts in NYC and ask their opinion. Good luck and it’ll all work out! |
I prefer the museums on the upper East. Plus The Corner Bookstore. |
