Viewing the Lyrid Meteor Shower

Anonymous
I'm thinking of waking the family up around 4AM on 4/23 and driving 30ish minutes out River Rd, then just stopping on the side of the road for a nice view of the meteor shower. Question -- is that far enough out of town? I think it gets pretty dark and rural pretty quickly out there, but is that enough? Also -- maybe a silly question, but would we be safe, e.g., far enough off the road to avoid other cars, and also not an attraction to folks thinking we've got no business there that time of day? If you can help, or know a better place/time to try, I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

No, that is not enough. We used to lay down in a field outside Bethesda but it's now a housing complex. You should scout out a few places in the next week or so, see what seems dark and comfortable.

Thanks. I was thinking out by Calleva summer camp, which is about 30 minutes out River. Maybe Clarksburg.

You're going to be fighting so much light pollution. But good luck. People would not believe what a big meteor shower is like when you aren't fighting the environment.

How far away do you recommend?

I live near Potomac Ave in the Palisades, overlooking the river. Is there any chance I'd see anything if I looked outside late Sat night or early Sunday morning? Or just too much light?
