Any idea how much it will cost to fix bike brakes?

Anonymous
I need bike brakes adjusted, that’s all. If it’s going to cost around a hundred I will just parlay that into a new bike (kids), but if it’s closer to $50 I’ll just let them tune it up, or whatever. Thanks!

It should be less than $50. Do you have a local bike shop? They can normally do it pretty quickly. We have a neighborhood bike shop and they are always very happy to help.

You should really learn how to do this simple task yourself.

+1 Just go on google. It's simple and kind of satisfying to fix.

I’ve tried three separate times with the help of YouTube, unsuccessfully. Maybe you can help?

The rear brake cable won’t stay in the brake handle, keeps popping out. Also, very tight won’t “click back” and is very rigid before it eventually slips out. I have no clue what terminology to use to find the help I need. My kid wants to use his bike, I’m frustrated and tired of failing so I’m ready to throw (a little) money at the problem. Any ideas how to help?

A good shop will give you a price before doing the work, as will REI.

It's possible you need a new cable and new housing.

Why not call your local bike shop(s) for an estimate?

Buy the brake pads on Amazon That way, the bike shop will only charge for labor.

What a nice story.

Brakes can be a pain if it's a cable problem and not just a matter of putting in new brake pads. If a whole bike costs $100 or more to fix, then it would be considerably less one would think.

Brakes seem like the kind of thing that require a highly trained expert to fix. They’re basically life-saving equipment. Do you really think you have the aptitude to go messing about with them? I think not.

Highly trained expert? No. But if OP doesn't trust themselves to recognize loose and/or frayed parts then yes, to the bike shop.

Yes, a highly trained expert.

Not you or I. Or anyone else untrained.

Wow the assumptions with you! I am not an expert and I have no proper bike repair training. But I've been riding bikes for decades and can fix many brake issues.

A kid who has been working at a bike shop for 4 days can likely fix OP's issue. That's not an expert.

Bike brakes are very easy to fix. Highly trained? Her kid should figure out how to do it and how to maintain everything else on his bike also. It's pretty simple stuff, really. If you can turn a wrench, I could train you in ten minutes.

I was fixing brakes when I was like 12 and riding a BMX bike. It's not hard, just a little time consuming. Stick with it after watching YT vids op, or tell your kids to try to fix it.
