What percentage of applicants are accepted into french immersion at Sligo Creek ES?

Just wondering if anyone knows what the chances of actually getting into the program are. Thanks!

I think it's 50 kids (less however many siblings are an automatic in, so probably closer to 40) out of about 300 applications.

but some parents send their kids in 1st grade when they finally get off the waitlist...

Thanks! Is there any "in-bounds" preference or is it straight lottery?

Straight lottery; no in-boundary preference.

Actually I think you have to apply again for 1st grade, because they wouldn't want to have to go through lists of kids who ate staying wherever they ended up in K.

In any case, DC entered the Sligo lottery for the 1st time for first grade - and got in. I don't know the 1st grade lottery stats, but it's possible that, while only a few slots might open up, fewer families apply for 1st. Either because they were discouraged from the K lottery experience, found a different school they like, or don't want to start an immersion program one year behind the other kids. (FWIW, DC's teachers said DC was caught up to the other kids by Jan.). I'm guessing, given variation in the small number of spots that open up in 1st each year, and variations in the small applicant pool from year to year, the actual odds of the lottery for 1st would vary dramatically from year to year.

Just curious, what number was your DC in the First Grade Lottery and when were you informed that you were offered a spot?

There is a lot on this forum about French Immersion at Sligo, but there isn't much info on French Immersion at Maryvale Elementary. Any parents on this forum willing to share any info, thoughts, feedback? Thanks!

Hi,

I don't want to put too much identifying information here. But we had a really low number (between 1 and 5) and got in over the summer. I guess a family learned it needed to leave DC over the summer, or a kid decided not to return.
