Best IOP program in DC area for 15yo with major depression?

Anonymous
Has been recommended by psychiatrist as a next step. We are on a mess rollercoaster and depression is getting worse with recent emergence of self harm and some thoughts of wanting to die. Please share your experiences. Psychiatrist does not think we need inpatient at this time but that IOP would be a good a good step. Thank you.

OP. I meant *meds* rollercoaster, not *mess* rollercoaster.

Helix in McLean. We have first hand-experience with a couple of these at the PHP and IOP level. If you are trying to keep your child home, I personally think that's your best bet in the D.C. area. Really good wraparound care, borrowing from the best practices at McLean Hospital at Harvard. They work to figure out the whole family system, evaluate what's happening at school academically and socially, and find solutions.

The downside is that they are not in-network for any insurance and it gets expensive.

Heartwood in Bethesda. No personal experience but it was recommended to us. Hopefully someone else will chime in.

Does Heartwood work with insurance? It looks like a great program.

Why would you avoid Heartwood?

Another vote for Helix. My DD did not want to go but ended up making a complete 180 (in a good way).

Embark Rockville is excellent

Heartwood is fine -- great psychiatrist but it's hit or miss with therapists. Disorganized front staff and communication.

Also, they often counsel kids out who have problems they don't think they can handle -- suicidal ideation, eating disorders etc. Several of the kids in my DC's group left partway through the program to go onto other treatments.

For self-harm and suicidal ideation, are you sure an IOP is going to be enough? I totally understand wanting to keep your kid home, but in our experience an IOP was something that was appropriate after in-patient treatment and then PHP to really make sure our DD was in a safe place and on the right track with both meds and therapy.

I'd consider getting a second opinion.
