Our 6th grader DD (AAP) is zoned to Frost MS for next year.
We're quite concerned about all those issues happening all over FCPS middle schools, like disruptive behaviors, bullying and incidents like Frost sexual assault or Liberty hospitalizations from THC gummies. Sure these incidents might happen everywhere, but we think that the probability/frequency of such things is lower than the rest of FCPS. We also hope that those schools have more moderate stances on the politics pushed by FCPS. Thoughts? (we're renting so moving is not a big issue other than the higher rent) |
Can you elaborate on this? |
send her to Cooper - none of the crap you mentioned is happening there |
OP here. Thank you all for your replies.
I mean all those things being discussed here in DCUM and elsewhere. I want to stay out of those as much as possible.
Thank you for your input!
Sure that might be some stupid email that the opponents picked up and use it for their purposes, but I mostly care about students/teachers being focused on everyday academics and not on political activism. |
Cooper is under construction. Go and look at it and see if you would feel comfortable sending your child there.
It’s at least two years away from completion. |
So you’re implying teachers and students only care about “political activism” at Frost?
Go to Cooper. You’ll fit it fine with all the Asra Nomani, Carrie Lukas, Glenn Miller and Luke Rosiak arch-conservative types there. |
lol |
More access to money, more drugs. |
As you can tell from the ratings Woodson/Frost have gone down the tubes from 9/9 to 6/7.
The only decent pyramid left is Langley/Cooper which is 9/10 and maybe McLean/Longfellow which is 7/8, but M/L has fallen a bit as well. |
The students don’t go in the part that’s actively under construction. They already completed one of the new sections. |
I just want an environment out from culture wars as much as possible. I didn't imply "only" anywhere. I assume that the culture wars thing exists in all middle schools, but part of my question was if it is less present in Cooper/Longfellow compared to Frost and others.
That's what I'm afraid of. But is it indeed more likely to have "THC incidents" in those schools?
Yeah I've seen the stats.. |
People who think like you tend to self-segregate at Cooper and Langley. You'll still have the drugs, the bullying, the eating disorders, and the teen suicides that you'd get in other pyramids (perhaps more given that some of these things positively correlate with family income) but you can ignore it and focus on the GS scores. Enjoy! |
All schools have drugs, the bullying, the eating disorders, and the teen suicides, however more affluent areas will have the resources to get their children help and not put up with poor behaviors especially since the parent's don't want their reputations damaged. |
If you say so. The thread is an agenda is search of a question. |
Taught at Cooper a while back. OP, the issues you mention happen everywhere. One other thing you might consider is how your child will respond to being among peers with the wealth that is in the Cooper/Langley pyramid. For some kids this wouldn't be a challenge, but for others, "keeping up" can be a thing, so something you might want to be mindful of as you make this decision. It's true that not every kid/family there lives in a mega-mansion, but when the norm seems to be that most families take multiple trips each year/students receive elaborate gifts for holidays/students have access to whatever they want, that can influence the social atmosphere in ways that might not serve your child. |
