Anyone else just get the email about Black History Month spirit week at BCCHS? I understand the intention. I wonder about the implementation.
As we enter the last full week of Black History Month, please join us in our Spirit Week. For Pan African Colors Day on Tuesday, weave some red, black, and green into your outfit, or wear African clothing. On Wednesday, for Decades Day, celebrate any decade, honoring Black culture and style. Thursday is Character Day. Choose a Black character from your favorite TV show or dress as an important Black Historical figure. For Blackout on Friday, wear all black, if you can. Remember, this week is to honor and celebrate Black history and culture. If you have any questions about what this means so that you are respectful and appropriate, please talk it over with a staff member. Thank you for participating. |
| Wow that seems really poorly thought out. |
| Really poorly thought out. No way would I have my kid do that. |
Huh???? What's poorly thought out? |
They don't need your kid to participate |
The focus of this is on tokenization. Character, style, wearing all black. It is all silly and fluff and likely to lead to so me tasteless costuming. How is this helping to celebrate black culture? |
| These themes were done every year when I was there, and they actually had traction. They could’ve been more explicit about not wearing Blackface on Friday, but I don’t see what the issue is. Don’t wanna do it? Don’t do it. Case closed. Let them celebrate the way they approve, at least they’re trying to include the entire student body/allies who wanna support. |
By bringing attention to lesser known Black figures, and Black leaders in general, and from all walks of life too (I.e. academia, business instead of just rap, etc.) |
| Oh, I just ADORE when DCUM even glances at a topic on race. This will end in civility! (Of course, it never does.) |
This isn't bringing recognition to figures and leaders and any kids outside that racial group can get targeted for doing it. |
… So then those who don’t want to do it aren’t forced to do it. Don’t see the point here. |
| This sounds like a recipe for disaster. |
|
Yeah, we got that last night and joked about what would happen if my blonde haired blue eyed DD showed up in kente cloth.
I appreciate the sentiment behind the week but so much could go wrong. |
Op here, this was one of my concerns as well. Participation, with good intentions, in following, the guidelines could possibly seem inappropriate to others. |

Yeah, this probably could've benefitted from some oversight or supervision from a thoughtful adult advisor who could see the potential pitfalls here.
Honestly, not EVERYTHING needs to be treated like Homecoming week. |
