| Come in here if you, like me, can't understand how all these self proclaimed middle class families are in Mexico and skiing and the Caribbean etc etc this week. Maybe this is a more than one kid problem but I have serious FOMO for all these families who can take a random full week off six weeks after Holiday break and six more weeks before another full week off. How do you do this with your jobs?? |
| I’ll bite. We are going on vacation now bc it’s much cheaper than either the Xmas break or Spring break. We will stay put and try to put our kids in camp during the April spring break. That’s it…it’s the first time we’ve gone anywhere for this mid-winter break in February. We also understand that DCPS won’t have it next year. Not rocket science… |
What job do you have where you can’t take a week off? |
Capitol Hill for one or any job touching it. It's appropriations, farm bill, tax extenders, defense bill season... for just one example. If you work in an agency in any budget or legislative touching role the budget is about to drop so you are in hearing prep. And then... all the other jobs. Basically 3 to 4 weeks off between Holiday break winter break and spring break all in four months is a burden no? |
| I feel you OP - I know two families in Paris this week! If it's any consolation it's looking pretty grey and dreary over there. |
|
We’ve been working at our jobs for 10+ years and have seniority that comes with a lot of annual leave. Can rollover large amounts every year.
Bought airline tix with points for this week. Got a 50% family discount for our hotel. Deals deals deals. |
|
Mexico is cheap. And my job is off Monday, I took Tuesday and Wednesday, and am "working" from the beach Thursday and Friday.
When we go to Hawaii our in-laws pay. When we go to NYC, we pay but a friend let's us use their condo. |
| I am in budget, but I set things up so that someone will cover my accounts and I will repay the favor later. We're only missing two business days. The flights are Southwest courtesy miles that I got after the travel nightmare that was Christmas. And we are going to a rinkydink ski area in northern VT. The weather looks likely to ruin it all anyway. Really, this isn't that big a deal as a vacation! |
That would be a burden, yes, but I don’t think most people do this? I didn’t take a single day off over the holidays, so this is our first vacation time since last fall. |
| A lot of people pretend to be middle class but actually get $$ from their parents. |
This. Who takes that much time off? I do a week for holidays and partial weeks for the others. |
| Me and my husband have generous leave policies, one child and a love of travel. Yes we are going to the Caribbean this week and Europe in April. And went to the Caribbean last fall and to Asia over last summer. We don’t drive flashy cars, don’t live as close to downtown as we’d like, don’t have house cleaners etc. but we love to travel and do it often. |
+1 their parents have beach homes and second homes that they go to for free. Also, they choose to spend their extra money on travel instead of charity or investing. Life choices. |
Just curious, do you know anyone who forgoes vacation so they can give to charity? |
+1 also A lot of them are not really middle class. |
