Bus to NYC tips

I'm taking a bus to NYC for the first time. It leaves from Tysons which is convenient for me as long as I can find the bus at the metro station. It leaves at 7:50, what time do I need to arrive to get a seat with my DH? Any tips, I'm happy to be avoiding Union Station but I love Amtrak.

A bus to NYC from Tysons? I had no idea these existed.

Yes the route appears to be:

1. Vienna/Fairfax orange line station
2. Tysons Corner silver line station
3. Manhattan- W 30th St between 9th and 10th avenues

I took one from Vienna and people were lining up about 20 minutes before.

We’re the buses full?

My wife has done Vamoose bus from Rosslyn many times, and I drop her off about 10 minutes before the bus departs.

We did the Vamoose one from Roslyn, got there 20 mins before. Same with the one departing Manhattan to come home.

Bus was full on the way there and half full coming home.

I’ll say: we hit horrible traffic on the way there and will never opt for the bus over Amtrak again if I can help it.

Why on earth would you do this?

We did it because we had to make a last minute trip to NYC in December and the Amtrak tix were $400 each for Regional and we didn’t want to drive and flying to NYC for the w/e is a PITA.

My husband and I dated DC / NY for about a year. I went back and forth between bus and train. Basically - sometimes the bus would run great, and I would think - this is amazing - I'm never paying for train. Then inevitability there would be a problem with the bus, traffic or otherwise - I would say - I hate this, and take train. Then there would be some issue with train and - delays or overcrowding, and I'd go back to bus - rinse and repeat.

I hope you have a great, easy trip!

Ha so true! I mainly take train now so I can work on the train. Otherwise I'd take the bus.

Yes, the traffic into the tunnels/bridges into Manhattan and Brooklyn can be so awful, it makes the bus TO New York much riskier in terms of time. Haven't had as many issues taking it back to DC, as long as it wasn't leaving Manhattan in afternoon rush hour.

Last time we went we drove and parked in Jersey City and took the PATH over- that was a nice compromise if you have 3 or 4 people
