Why do we have to celebrate St. Patrick's Day?

Anonymous
Now that Valentine's Day is over...

I'm not Irish. I'm not into drinking. I'm so depressed that remembering to wear green on a random March day so coworkers don't comment is basically impossible. Why do we make such a big deal out of thing and why do we force others into acknowledging it? I can't really think of another holiday where you absolutely can't get away with ignoring it completely.

We celebrate it because it is my son’s birthday, my grandmother’s birthday and my MIL was Irish.

No one is forcing you. To answer your question about others celebrating, people like fun holidays every month.

So you agree it's ok to call someone out for not wearing green on a holiday they feel no connection to? Weird.

Where do you work? I'm Jewish and it has literally never been an issue. Some people show up in green or wear fun shamrock things - whatever. I do vaguely make sure my daughter has something green in her outfit since she's in elementary school. Can't imagine this being a thing as an adult.

Honestly, it's like "May the Fourth Be With You" on May 4th. Or Valentine's Day or Mardi Gras or Cinco de Mayo.

Totally fine if you don't celebrate or acknowledge in any way, but not worth getting upset about IMO. Small little random days to provide entertainment or levity make life more enjoyable. I once worked in an office that had fun every year with "Talk Like A Pirate Day" in September. It was stupid in a funny kind of way, and funny in a stupid kind of way.

Let’s back up. Why do we have to celebrate Valentine’s Day?

Are you that weak that a comment about not wearing green gets to you? I mean, buck up. It’s not a big deal and you’re not required to celebrate or wear green.

Why do we have to celebrate Presidents' Day? And MLK Day? And Juneteenth?
Anonymous
You don’t have to. I don’t. I don’t give AF what comments my coworkers or anyone else makes.

Because it's the middle of winter and depressing. Valentines Day and St. Paddy's day are reasons to change it up and do something fun. Don't want to participate, don't have to.

No one actually celebrates those as happy holidays though other than an MLK parade and a speech at work. There isn't special food, special colors and activities (like leprechaun traps) associated.

I don't understand how someone can't remember what day St. Patricks is on- the date doesn't change! Just wear green- done. No one actually cares if you don't do anything.

The only holiday - really? You must celebrate Christmas.

What the hell does your religion have to do with anything here? Should I add....Well I'm gay and it's never been an issue or...well I'm Hispanic and it's never been an issue. What are you doing?

Np - Jewish friends can correct me here, but from what I know many Jewish people don’t celebrate Saint Patrick’s day or Saint Valentine’s Day because they are holidays named after Christian saints.

You don’t. Just don’t if you don’t want to. If anyone comments you can reply that you’re not Irish and you didn’t feel like wearing Green. There is no need to participate in things you don’t want to, just let go of that imaginary burden.
