BCC teacher has a problem

Anonymous
This morning parents received an email from the principal telling us that a teacher had told black students in his class that he could not tell them apart. The email, which of course was written or edited by the central office, further stated that they were "investigating," blah blah blah.

The email, and the lack of immediate action, made me want to vomit. Is this 2023? Have we somehow completely lost our way? The only solution, if this is true, is to fire the teacher. Do not send him to a DEI training, do not reassign him to a different MCPS school, do not pass go. No adult who interacts daily with CHILDREN should have such crap coming out of his mouth.

My kid just got home and said the teacher lacks a filter (based on DC's personal knowledge) and that teacher was, in fact, fired. I hope this is true.

This could be anything from "All of you look the same to me." to a teacher who called one student by the name of another and then apologized, saying that they look similar.

Could be. Maybe wait a bit and get some info before stirring the DCUM pot. It will all come out sooner or later.

Even though what the teacher said as presented is jarring, I do think due process is important. So I don't think it's bad they said they are investigating.

The logical conclusion to me would be for that teacher to be fired, but I'm not sure that's the only logical outcome that has to happen here. Would need a lot more context and information to be sure. But still, definitely a troubling and alarming experience for students!

Nobody should be fired for a slip of the tongue.

These kids probably have it all on video. I'm goings to wait to see the tape before having any feelings about what might have happened

That kind of remark said towards black students in any context is not appropriate, especially in the current charged climate. To claim ignorance defies imagination with all the racist attacks on school property.

Let’s wait and see what was actually said. Something like “you two look alike” is NOT the same as “all you people look alike.”

Every year I have little white kids whose names I mix up because they look so much alike. Mixing kids up is not offensive. Saying “all you people look alike” is offensive.

Yes, we are having an issue all around the country.

Teachers are not perfect and never have been. This is absolutely nothing new. The hope is we don't go down the path of Republican crap and go backward, but honestly, I don't see that happening unfortunately. I see it getting worse. The good news is this is MD so the teacher getting fired yay!

They were not fired for a one time slip.

If they were fired then it is more egregious than just what OP posted.

The teacher must have had other warnings. This would not be a one off situation.

I am sure every kid has it videoed we will know by the end of the day.

My kids are biracial. Some kids said they looked like some other non-related biracial kid, but they look nothing like those kids.

Some people are just really bad at telling the difference between people.

I bet that teacher has very few interactions with PoC, just as those people I refer to above aren't used to seeing biracial people. So they all "look a like". It's ignorance, but still, as a teacher, you'd think they'd have some filter.

Are you under the impression that the principal, or Board of Ed, can immediately fire a teacher? OP, come on. Don't be dense.

It was what was said if it was said that was offensive.

I get tired of teachers calling my kid by a nickname that isn't theirs or by a different version of their name.

I'm sure the vast majority of the people on this forum are foaming at the mouth at the opportunity to step in and take the place of these teachers. Please, be a part of the solution. Instead of whining on these forums, quit your big law, tech, or sales job. Wake up at 6 am. Deal with 150 teenagers a day and their screaming parents. Coach a team and then drive 75 minutes home up 270 because your $60k / year salary can't buy you anything south of Germantown. The world needs you to step up and take the place of this man you demand be fired.

Don't come between a man and his meal.
