Indian lentil recipe with fresh tomatoes?

Anonymous
I lived with a flat mate during my student days who used to make Indian lentils. I remember he added fresh tomatoes at the end. It was really good, but I cannot recreate it cause these are the only ingredients I remember. Anyone know this recipe or what this recipe may be called?

It’s called daal. Just pressure cook 1/2 cup of lentil of your choice with half a teaspoon of turmeric. Then separately fry thin sliced onions until soft, add minced garlic, and whole cumin seeds and fry until oil is infused with all those flavors. I usually fry chopped tomatoes in too but also fine to add at the end. Add the oil and daal together and you have your basic daal.

Thank you!

Sub ghee for oil, and it will taste even better. You can also go in all sorts of directions from what the PP posted. Add ginger, add a little Garam masala, a little chopped green chili, etc.

Yes and please call it what it is. Daal.

Don’t change it lentils with cumin and tomato or whatever fancy name that erases it from it’s authenticity like ‘chickpea stew’ or ‘golden milk’.

I'll add that unless you grow or get your fresh tomatoes from a farmers' market, they will do nothing for your daal. Canned tomatoes would be better. They, at least, taste like tomatoes.

If you're using an Instant pot, you can saute the spices, garlic, ginger, and tomatoes first right in the pot and then add the lentils and water or broth. I usually throw spinach in there too..and finish with fresh chopped cilantro before serving.
