Metformin for weight loss?

Anonymous
I want to lose 10 pounds, but regular exercise and a pretty strict diet has me stuck at the same exact weight. I just had my physical and mentioned this to my doctor. She offered to prescribe Metformin, which she said has worked well for other patients who just needed to lose 5-10 pounds. Unlike Ozempic, I had never heard of this as a weight loss drug, and there's pretty limited info about this use online. I'm wondering if anyone has used it for this?

It’s not a weight loss drug. Some people see marginal weight loss with it. No harm in trying it, it’s very safe and has benefits. It does typically make you sh** your brains out for at least a week.

I would find someone who understands nutrition to help you set macros. You don’t need weight loss drugs to lose 10 pounds. Were you counting calories on your strict diet?

I have been on 500 mg for close to a year now after being told I had diabetes. I’ve lost about 25-30 pounds since then. I also gave up sweets completely, totally, 100 percent, have generally been on a low carb (but not keto) diet, and have been walking at least 5 miles a day.

Somehow I doubt I’d have the weight loss on metformin alone.

Metformin isn’t a weight loss drug. Many are prescribed it as a first line treatment for high blood sugar and the weight loss you see is accompanied by other lifestyle changes.

I would do Wellbutrin instead. I easily drop weight on Wellbutrin with zero diet or exercise when I struggled with strict diets and lots of exercise that wouldn't budge the scale.

I was in a similar situation and doc prescribed it. Lost 15 pounds in a few months with no other lifestyle changes.
