Kids With Special Needs and Disabilities
| Can anyone recommend a book or two for siblings of children diagnosed with ASD (preferably autism and not Aspergers)? My 5 yr old is ready to learn a little bit more about his 4 yr old sibling who "has trouble talking and playing", and we could use a little bit of help with the explanation. Thanks in advance for your suggestions! |
| I think the children's book My Brother Charlie written by Holly Robinson Peete and her daughter is quite cute and well done and the illustrations are precious. |
| There's a book called Walking with Ian, or something like that. If you go to Amazon and search for "autism brother" you'll get several suggestions. |
| for asperger's there's All Cats have Asbergers |
| All Cats Have Aspergers is a bit controversial. Personally, i dislike it, but some people like it. |

Reading some back posts so not sure if this is still timely/helpful to be chiming in now, but we have two wonderful books that help explain some of the issues of ASD in language young kids can understand. The first is called Tobin Learns to Make Friends by Diane Murrell. The characters are trains and it explains how Tobin sometimes behaves differently than the other trains (talks too loudly, doesn't like lots of sounds, gets doesn't understand other trains' feelings, etc.).
Then there's a sequel called Friends Learn about Tobin. |

"Looking after Louis" It's a very nice book, but it is about a lower functioning child. My daughter loves it (both of my kids have HFA) . |
