Hilton Head as an AA traveler

Anonymous
Does any African-American have any experience to share? Several places on the island are still called “plantation”! We want to go as a family because of the beaches, etc., but would we as AA’s feel uncomfortable?

Because they used to be plantations. It's a history thing. They're not going to deny you access.

Gee, thanks.

I didn’t ask if they were going to make us pick cotton or something.

Hilton Head is all about the golf. If you're not into the golf it might not be the spot for you.

While not AA, we go to HH often and see many AA families vacationing there. The beaches, bike riding, restaurants make it a great vacation spot.

But I appreciate your hesitation, we’re white and I hate that they’re still called plantations.

I’m AA and never felt uncomfortable in HH the two times I visited.

We’re white but I know AAs who have enjoyed Hilton Head. It’s made up of a bunch of gated communities so you have to be a guest or they won’t let you in (though Sea Pines, which is great, lets you buy day passes). The island itself has a lot of diversity of race and socioeconomics, but the gated communities not as much. I’ve never heard of other mom-white people having an issue there, though. As far as liking it, it depends on what you like to do. Lots of outdoor activities (beach, biking, golf, birding, tennis/Pickleball, kayaking, etc.), but not much culture or entertainment. Nice day trips to Savannah and other spots.

I’m a human being who’s never been in South Carolina, but it’s so sad that you asking a question like this might even feel necessary, let alone that it might
actually be necessary.

A Wealthy friend of mine who is black bought a second home in HH. She has faced some racism and seemed pretty shocked by it.

We are not AA but are Hispanic Jewish family. We have vacationed there for years and loved it. We thought about buying a 2nd home or retirement home there. We went in November 2020 and spent 2 weeks there and felt pretty uncomfortable. We decided it is a nice place to visit but not really a minority friendly area.

It's the sad reality of much of the deep south. And what's sadder is, it used to be a lot worse.

We are a black family and have visited HHI for the past 6 years. We love it! The locals and tourists are friendly, and we personally have never experienced nor seen any issues with discrimination or racism.

HHI is our happy place that we visit every single year no matter what other trips we take, and we are a well traveled family.
