Seriously, asking money for most of this stuff is weird. Especially things that are only like $20-30 new. People on my neighborhood list serve will ask $5-10 for a used training potty. And it's never people who are hard up for cash, either. They are just stingy.
When I got rid of stuff like that I just gave it to friends with younger kids, donated it to a local shelter if they were taking the items in question, or curbed it. A lot of it was stuff I had received as hand me downs to begin with. And it's not like we're rich. I just don't try to nickel and dime people over something my kid peed in for the last year. So weird. /rant |
Maybe they are stingy, but I think they probably don't shop used themselves and don't know the market.
Also I don't know... I see people on here who talk about buying top of the line clothes or baby equipment, and then congratulate themselves for their generosity in donating it rather than selling it. They could have done a lot more good by just buying used or buying a cheaper brand and donating the money saved to charity. |
You are probably right but I still find it amazing that people think that "50% from new" is a good discount for something their child literally pooped in. |
I buy used underwear so I can throw it out when there's a poop accident.
Sometimes people really need cash. It's a kindness to buy their stuff. |
That’s..disgusting. |
Counterpoint: Sometimes people don’t need cash and just really believe their baby gear that has been covered in spit up, pee, poop, etc. is worth money. They are incorrect. |
There are people that believe that if there is a cost to an item, like $5, buyers are less likely to flake than if they were giving the item away for free. |
I disagree. I like picking up used stuff for a few dollars. Why not a used potty? They can be bleached.
You think you’re so awesome for giving it away to “charity” but most of those are fake charities and they sell the potty for $10. I don’t get hand me downs from anyone sadly. |
Many families are hurting financially due to the extreme inflation going on in our country now. |
My guess is not that they are stingy. It’s that they’re overextended and up to their eyeballs in debt trying to not appear to be hard up for cash. |
Oh well then they failed because if you live in a home worth a million+, drive nice cars brand new cars, and dress in designer clothes and wear nice jewelry, and then post your toddlers used potty on the neighborhood listserv for $5, I will assume you are either stingy AF or that you're in debt up to your eyeballs. Seriously folks, in most neighborhoods with lots of families, you can put this stuff in a box on the curb with words "Free" on the side and post a little "free item alert" to the list serve, and it will be gone in 20 minutes. I once put an old stroller out on our sidewalk with a "free" sign and it was gone so fast that I had to double check that I'd actually put it out because it didn't feel possible someone had already taken it. |
I don't understand why you expect people to give everything away for free. I give plenty away but have generally sold baby gear. Its expensive and adds up. Clearly you are wealthy if you can use something for a short time and not think twice. |

If it went that fast, someone took it to sell. Thats the thing about giving stuff away free that has value. People will take it and then upcycle it to sell. I tend to bundle everything so Ill be like $20-25 for training potty for the house, two car travel potties, multiple toilet toppers (hard plastic seat covers), and a toilet seat with a ladder plus 5-6 potty kid books. |
We're talking about things that are cheap to begin with. No one is criticizing someone selling their used stroller for 60-70% off the retail price -- strollers are pricy and a lot of people would jump at paying $150 for a stroller that normally costs $400. That's an actual deal, assuming the stroller is in good condition. Same with stuff like strider bikes, any furniture, expensive gear like baby carriers or hiking backpacks (though I'd expect a steep discount because these tend to show quite a bit of wear and tear), etc. A lot of baby gear has real value even after being used for a while, because it can be very expensive new. But some stuff is cheap when bought new and also gets used pretty hard. Or just insanely easy to come by. I've seen people try to sell a bag of used muslin swaddles for $15. Not new in package, but heavily used. Yes to the $5-$10 used training potty. Also people trying to sell used baby gates for like 50% off their retail price, which (1) you can find if you stalk sales, and (2) baby gates get janky after they've been used a while, I would not pay for a used one. I've also seen random stuff like step stools that retail for $5 at IKEA being re-sold for $3 -- what on earth? People trying to sell opened and half-used bags of diapers at the same cost-per-unit as a new bag. And so on. And these people are dual income families who are feds, lawyers, doctors, etc. They are just being cheap. |
