Kid Friendly Scandinavia Itinerary

Anonymous
Hi, we are thinking of spending two weeks in Scandinavia in August with kids ages 5, 7 and 7. We definitely want to see Stockholm and would consider Copenhagen but also want to get out into the countryside to do some hiking, boating, etc. Any suggested itineraries or must see places? Thanks in advance.

I think adding Copenhagen to visit Tivoli is an obvious possibility. It’s really a great place and I expect would be very memorable for kids.

Adding Oslo (maybe the Viking Ship museum or outdoor museum) and then doing some version of the Norway in a nutshell tour up to Flam and Bergen (via train and boat) is also worth considering.

Perhaps a good substitute is the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, Denmark, 30-40 minutes from Copenhagen. We took elementary schoolers there and loved that it is very participatory. Craftsmen demonstrate building techniques and we even went for a short voyage on a traditional reconstructed Viking ship. (Turns out that it's hard work to row and to steer those boats!) The boats in the museum are not as showy as those in the Oslo museum, but the full experience is really worthwhile, especially with kids.

Actually it’s closed until 2026. We live in Oslo and pass it often.

Copenhagen is really good for kids. Highly recommend the viking ship museum in roskilde and the Experimentarium, but all museums are really kid friendly. You might also consider the Lego House (and Legoland) in Billups.
