stand mixer--alternatives to kitchen aid?

Anonymous
Hello. I'd like to purchase a stand mixer and it seems like Kitchen Aid is the most popular choice. But what about Cuisinart or Hamilton Beach? Any reason to get one of those brands or just go with the Kitchen Aid?

I don't know anything about those other brands but I've had my Kitchen Aid over 20 years and it is still perfect. I use it all the time for baking and other things. I've never had a day of trouble with it.

The only good alternative is vintage kitchen aid made by Hobart

Bosch also makes one but it's going to be on the pricier side compared to an equivalent Kitchen Aid model. Is this more for making cakes and cookies or for kneading dough?

Same. Make sure you get the color you want because you’ll have it forever.

Cakes and cookies. What size would be best for that?

It is short-sighted to get anything other than a kitchenaid. You can do so much with it.

Love my Bosch. I hated my Kitchen Aid mixer. I have the compact size Bosch mixer.

If all* I were making was cakes and cookies, I'd go for something less expensive

*No disrespect to cakes and cookies -- I have butter softening right now! But the bigger motor on a Kitchen Aid or similar matters more for bread dough

There is this fancy Swedish mixer I’ve read about, but it’s expensive. https://www.epicurious.com/shopping/this-swedish-mixer-is-more-powerful-than-a-kitchenaid-article/amp

Hamilton Beach??? You are delude. Get your kitchenaid.

I grew up using a Sunbeam Mixmaster and far prefer it to my kitchenaid. Easier to add ingredients. Easier to scrape down sides. Beaters actually clean the bottom of the bowl.

If you only make cakes and cookies, no need for a kitchenaid. And I don’t use a mixer for bread.

I used to have a KA, but now use the Ankarsrum. If you primarily want to make bread, this is a fabulous machine. It’s got a stronger motor than KA and much bigger capacity. I also love that the motor is is in base, so it is less prone to ‘weak’ across the counter when mixing a stiff dough, and it leaves the top open, which makes it so much easier to add ingredients while the mixer is running. Plus it has a paddle that continuously scrapes the sides while the mixer runs, which I found awkward with KA (you have to stop-scrape-restart in order to avoid blotches of unmixed flour/butter).

There is one recipe that it cannot seem to do well - a very airy focaccia recipe that I used to make, where the KA paddle did a fabulous job of stretching and twisting the strands of gluten, the Ankarsrum just cannot achieve this.

For cakes, the attachment mixer & bowl work fine, but are nothing special.

I also use the slicer/grater attachments, which work by turning the machine awkwardly on its side. Looks strange, but works well.

I would choose a KA if I thought I would use it. Considering the time of year (Black Friday sales), start shopping a pouch when you see the BEST deal. Search everywhere, from Kohls to Target to Amazon to QVC.

Bosch compact. The motor is more powerful than the kitchen aid. I bake several times a week for our family of 5 and it’s perfect.
