Plate size for a buffet

Anonymous
Can I put out 9 and 1/4 inch plates for a casual weekend open house? This will be in the afternoon and we will have either heavy appetizers including sandwich platters. Everything will be finger foods.

Do you think it’s weird not to use dinner or buffet plates?

TIA for answering a question that I’m sure NOBODY else would care about.

I think the 9 1/4" plates are preferable to anything bigger, like 12" or even 10". They will be a little easier to hold but you can still put quite a bit of food on them. Anything smaller might be too small.

It’s a casual weekend open house. Do what you want. Just know that if you put out smaller plates, you will have to put more of them out as people will keep coming back to try other things. So there will be more trash. Make sure trash receptacles are easy to find, or you’ll find used plates piled up in the oddest places.

This is kind of what I was thinking. I use this size plate at lunch (and the event will be between lunch and dinner) so I was thinking it would hold the right amount of food and be easier to maneuver.

Thanks!

Great point about the trash- thanks!

I'm confused. Why would it create more trash?

9 1/4” will be a good size. Larger may be too large if you’re serving mostly appetizers. Appetizer plates are usually smaller, like 6-7”.

That sounds fine. Don't spend more money when you already have plates.

Appetizer plates are so small, so even though this is heavy apps, that’s what I was thinking! Since it’s all finger foods, the plate can be piled with whatever people like bc they don’t have to push anything around with a fork. I may have overthought this 🤣
