Completely changed name anyone know if you have to change name with SSA before getting new passport?

Anyone have experience with this? If you’ve changed your name completely (new first, last, and middle), do you have to change your name with Social Security first before getting a new passport in your new name

My guess is that the answer is yes. But you should go to the passport application page and look at what documents you need to prove you are who you say you are -- and see what's required to meet that criteria. good luck.

I am pretty sure that when I change my name the first thing I had to do was change my social security number.

Same. Spend hours at the Social Security Office getting my name changed. Then driver's license. Then everything else.

When you change your name, you have to get a new SS card in your new name before you can even get an official ID in your new name.

every newborn and newly wed who changes their name goes through SSA first

Yes - SSA first. Then passport. Then things get marginally easier.

FYI, if you have any frequent flier accounts w/ airlines I found those to be among the most annoying ones to get updated (needing weeks to process!)

Good luck OP. I found it to be a complete PITA.

FWIW I managed to hyphenate my last name on my passport without changing it formally at SS. (I added my married name to my maiden name with a hyphen.)

Thanks, everyone. Wish me luck dealing with the SSA!

Agree with others. SSA, then DMV, then Passport.

And of course the rinse and repeat for all else: banks, credit cards, other financial institutes (401k, investments, loans); the IRS; the USPS; your employer; insurance providers (medical, dental, auto, home, life); anything major you own, owe on, or rent (mortgage, rental lease, car deed); utilities (cell, cable, electricity, water, gas etc); doctors and specialists; any services you frequent (tax preparer, attorney, financial advisor, veterinarian, hair dresser, therapist, lawn service); clubs and activities (gym membership, neighborhood association, alumni); social media and online presence (LinkedIn, your email accounts); online retail (Amazon and other shopping accounts); magazine and delivery subscriptions; loyalty programs (airline frequent flyer, Costco, CVS, etc); your resume and name on mailbox; and of course your contacts and people you’re close to (maybe state the change in a holiday card this year or mass bcc email notice to extended family and friends?

Probably something like Mary Jane Smith, who went by Jane not Mary, is now Jane Smith Husband-name.

Yes, you will have to show an ID with your correct name in order to get your passport. Also have to show all documentation that justifies your name change like marriage cert or court order. Have fun getting your Real ID at the DMV, might as well take your entire document folder along with you.

I have been married 6 years. I changed my drivers license at the DMV right after getting married. I've never changed it on my SSN. To change my last name on my passport, they just need me to mail in my old passport, my marriage certificate, and a new photo.

Nothing about SSN was involved.
