sorry -- that shoudl be What's the teaching job market LIKE in MD?

There's a hiring freeze in Montgomery County and it looks to be at least through July 2011, if not longer.

Most governments are suffering horribly from the recession right now and it will take at least another year to even start to recover. FY12 doesn't look good for most. In fact, FY12 will hit education particularly hard because all of the federal Stimulus money will have been expended and local jurisdictions will have to find money from elsewhere just to keep the schools going.

MD isn't as bad off as some states like NY and NJ who have laid off thousands of teachers. BUT, those teachers are invading MD flooding it with available teachers. I've been to 2 job fairs in MD and they were mobbed. Half of the people there were from out of state. It was ridiculous! And schools who aren't used to being so popular suddenly started asking for the moon. They don't just want certified ES teachers, they want people who are dual certified in elementary and special ed. The most jobs were special ed, math and science. If you are anything else, you might want to think of Plan B.

MCPS educator here:

MCPS is currently working through transfers and internal placements. There are over 500 jobs listed on the job database but many of them are part-time positions. Principals will probably not be interviewing applicants new to the system until the end of June. In any case, contact Human Resources, and submit the preliminary information needed so you can be considered for openings that will occur through out the summer. Some new hires don't get hired by MCPS until a week before school starts in August. Good luck!

Is it hard to find a job as an art teacher in MCPS, or any public school for that matter??

I'm elementary certified and apparently we are a dime a dozen right now. I wish I were math, science or special ed certified.

From what I hear even being certified in math doesn't guarantee you anything these days.

As for art, that's a subject people are cutting back on. So I don't know for sure but I'd guess that it is hard to find a job right now. If on the other hand you want to offer after school art classes to schools that can afford to hire their own "extras" you might find some work doing that.

Art? Ha! MCPS doesn't believe in spending money on teaching Art. Away with all subjects that don't enhance the math scores! Most MCPS students can solve an algebraic equation when they graduate but how many can tell the difference between Matisse and Monet? ......I thought so.
