EU vs US on Russian visa bans

Anonymous
Why is the US so opposed to the Russian visa ban while the EU seems split or even in favor of banning Russian tourists.

It seems like the US would be leading the way on canceling or not issuing visas. I thought we moved our consulate out of Russia altogether a while ago, at least to some remote place if it’s even in Russia.

Seems odd to me that we are not restricting our enemies from visiting.

Because we take money from anyone.

I have no idea why any country is under the delusion that Russians should be welcomed in any wester country.
I agreed with uk barring athletes from Russia at Wimbledon.
I agree with FIFA and hockey banning international play.

Why any country is still issuing any visa to any Russian is asinine when every other day Russia threatens nuclear war against us.
This is another example of terrible foreign policy by the US. We should cancel all tourist and entertainment visas for Russia and Belarus. Should have been done 6 months ago.

I have Russian friends and neighbors who still have elderly parents in Russia: they all loathe Putin, they are well aware that Ukrainians are innocent and are being killed for nothing, and they hate this stupid war.

It seems unfair for such Russians to be denied entry to countries where their kids and grandkids live.

I agree. Also, if we want to ban Russians, why not ban those from some brutal African regimes? Or any person from any country that starts wars without a reason? Oh wait…

When will people understand that an ordinary Russian Ivan has zero influence on what the regime does? The only ones who do are the ones actually fighting, let’s ban them. And oligarchs I guess, let’s ban them.
But someone who needs to go to Europe or the US to visit their relatives? No.

We have plenty of relatives and friends in Russia. Those of them who support Putin and believe their propaganda have neither intention nor money to come to the US, ever.

US is behind the curve here. EU is right; there is no gray area with Russia. We tried that for 30 years and they are still the same monsters we were taught.

None of the old, developed EU countries want the visa ban. Finland supports restrictions which surprised me; they are level headed unlike all the new “democracies” of Eastern Europe.
Also, Russians were taught Americans are monsters. So? You can’t just completely shut out and avoid large countries. It’s not North Korea or Cuba or even Iran.

Germany and France have some compromise deal they are going to pitch that makes visas from Russia 2-4 times more expensive, more scrutiny and removes priority status Russia had previously.

EU will do something but not an outright ban.

I do not really care about Russians who have family in the us or Europe and want to visit. If we ban them or jack up the price to 10-20k it is ok with me

Of course you don’t, people usually care about something that has to do with them directly
If you’ve never been in a situation when your loved one is in a country that is doomed and you can’t get them out of there, you probably won’t understand what it’s like

Eh, ban all of the barbarians. Something like 85% of Russians support the Ukraine invasion. These aren’t civilized people so constrain them to their own sh*thole country.

I have no more interest in understanding them as they do me. Keep the savages out of the civilized world. Worked for Rome for a free thousand years, if America and Europe can pull it off for a thousand I call it a win.

You cite the information from the Russian state-controlled media report. According to that report, you also support the invasion and should be sent there immediately.

This is exactly what the EU did yesterday. Reduced availability of visas from Russians and raised the costs. US should do the same to Russia, Belarus and Serbia. All 3 of those countries are truly terrible run by evil people.
