We’re hosting a casual brunch for 12 this weekend. We have another event that will occupy us until an hour before guests arrive so I’ve drafted a pretty simple menu I can assemble and cook with ease (eg, no complicated recipes or preparations) As far as balance and variety go, how does this sound? There are no vegetarians or dietary restrictions with this group.
Drinks: Hot coffee Iced coffee Orange juice Mimosa and screwdriver bar Ice bucket with hard seltzer, ciders, and light beer (our friends are day drinkers) Food: Scrambled eggs with chives Pork sausage links and turkey sausage patties Bagels, lox, and toppings (variety of cream cheeses, capers, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers) Green salad Fruit salad Watermelon, feta, mint salad Blueberry muffins Donuts I have a variety of snacks (mixed nuts, tortilla chips and salsa, hummus and pita, veggies and dip) if the group stays a bit and we need another round of food. The only thing that seems to be “missing “is some sort of breakfast potato, but we don’t typically eat those in our house so it’s not usually front of mind. |
I would add a main lunch dish like lasagna or something since most of what you have is breakfast related. I’d also get some coke and sprite because most of your drink offerings are breakfast or alcohol. |
| Could you do bacon ideas of one of the sausages? Looks yummy! Have fun! |
| Maybe buy a quiche? |
| You need something lunchy like sandwiches or add lunch meat to your list to make bagel sandwiches. |
| A couple of fresh baguettes and good cheese. |
| I personally think it sounds delicious! But if you’re saying brunch people may be looking for some non-breakfast foods. |
| Everything except the drinks looks fine to this picky eater. I just want ice water. |
| It sounds delicious but it sounds like breakfast not brunch. |
| How about a hearty soup and some crusty bread |
I feel like it might be too hot for that right now. |

OP here. Thanks for your input! I guess it’s kind of like a breakfast/brunch. People are coming at 9:30 AM so may expect both. We do have tons of non-alcoholic drinks that will be out. Ice water with lemon, seltzer water, and soft drinks.
Maybe I will add a couple of quiches I can make an advance and then he up. One with Bell peppers, onions, and pepper jack cheese, and maybe one with bacon and Gruyere. I also thought I could make little BLTs on a stick: alternate cherry tomatoes, a small wedge of lettuce, and bacon drizzled with blue cheese dressing, and maybe avocado toast, if I scrap the quiches? |
Quiche OR scrambled eggs not both. I like the BLT avocado toast idea. |
|
I am a vegetarian non-drinker and I would be thrilled to get to someone's house and have these options. I hope you have a great time.
If you do the BLT, maybe maybe some of them without the bacon in case any of your friends also don't eat meat? |
| OK again. I think I’ve settled on the final two more savory lunch options. I’m going to make croque monsieurs on mini croissants with melted Swiss and ham, and do a savory, crustless egg bake with bacon, onion, and Colby Jack. I do want to keep both scrambled eggs and the addition of the quiche as the eggs will be light and healthy while the quiche will be a little more indulgent. we luckily do not have any dietary constraints with this group of friends, but I do like to do a balance of more indulgent foods and lighter foods. Thanks again for everybody giving input! |
