I just learned about college insurance - Gallagher insurance company

I was just quoted $157 year. $25 dollar deductible to cover electronics, theft etc.

Any experience?

Does it also provide liability if the student damages the dorm? Like causing a fire while cooking or microwaving?

Check with your current homeowners insurance first. We were able to get coverage for our college student via USAA for a ridicously low number - less than any other offers we received once they enrolled.

We used NSSI for our kids. Very reasonable, never needed to file a claim but know people who did and it was easy.

Personally, our home owners deductible is $1K, as you never really want to file with them unless it's a high cost damages. So NSSI for under $200/year for $6K of coverage is worth it. Never know when there will be a fire, water leaks that damage your kid's stuff and/or computer/phones/etc. I've seen pipes freeze while kids are on winter break and they come back to everything they own damaged.

DD did lemonade last year and did her own renters insurance policy for this year. We have a 1% deductible on our homeowners so in now way do we want to add her to our policy. She paid just under 140 this year for 10K in possessions, she is renting furniture. She has 300K for liability to cover the landlord.

Call your agent. Ours was State Farm. Say you need a dorm policy or a remter’s policy. Do it every year. Done

Even if your homeowner's policy will cover your student- it's not worth the hit to your policy or the deductible. Get a student policy with Lemonade, NSSI or Gallagher. They are cheap and cover many college kid damages homeowner's policies likely won't like water (ie: spilled coffee/soda) damage to electronics. If needed, you can add on liability.
