This is important news if you are planning a beach vacation for your family.
Even deadly great white sharks have now been spotted! https://nypost.com/2022/07/13/4-great-white-sharks-spotted-in-two-days-off-cape-cod/ These sharks are well known to attack without provocation and even in shallow water. Be aware. |
Great whites are not "well known to attack without provocation and even in shallow water." That's not true. |
This has been an issue on Cape Cod for years, nothing new. |
The odds are so slim. You have better odds of getting killed in a bike accident on vacation than getting attacked by a shark. |
Shark attacks are EXCEEDINGLY RARE.
The ones that happen are well publicized because they are rare and because the public has a fascination for large predators. Do you know cows kill people sometimes? You don't hear about it because people don't think of a large domestic herbivore as being all that dangerous ![]() |
It's definitely not. |
It's actually good news:

This has been going on for decades there. They have a seal population there. The great whites are attracted to that and humans get caught up in that. Not the best beach/location for swimming. Don’t you watch Shark Week? This is well documented and studied. |
I'm on the Cape and my sharktivity app has been going crazy today. But that's because a spotter pilot is out and reporting the sharks. They are always out there, but they are just being reported more frequently now because many sharks have been tagged and they now have some detection buoys that work in real time, and they are using the spotter planes more frequently. Most of them are quite far from the beach. It doesn't stop me from going to the beach, and based on the crowds it's not stopping others either.
There have been sharks from Florida to Maine this year. |
That's cause humans are invading their territory.
if they come on land and hang out, we will be the one hunting them down. |
So is your chance of dying in a mass shooting. But we still sold our condo in the city, won’t travel anymore, and moved the kids to a rural private school with a gatehouse. |

This has been going for a couple of decades now -- perhaps related to climate change?
I remember that the rising number of shark attacks was a top story in the summer of 2001. Then 09/11 happened and it was forgotten. |
+1 This means our oceans are getting healthier. |
