Rented a Rug Doctor To Deep Clean My Carpets And…..

Anonymous
My cat had very bad diarrhea and was very incontinent for the past few yrs. of his life & left my LR and Bedroom built-in, wall to wall carpeting w/deeply embedded dried cat 💩 in a few corners.

I rented a carpet shampoo er (Rug Doctor Pro) from the grocery store + it appears to be doing a good job of removing the uck. 😮‍💨

However I am a Female and am having the hardest time moving it around.
Yesterday it took me like two hrs. just to clean the LR carpet.
I am fifty-three and my body is just killing me this morning.

I have to return the machine tmw and still need to do a bedroom as well as the hall.
Plus it is hot now too.

Does anyone have any tips on how I can get this job done?
I live alone so have no one to assist me.
Would it just be better to call in the pros to deep clean my carpets?
Would they do a much better job vs. a rental carpet cleaner??

Ugh my back HURTS!

Just keep putting one foot in front of the other. You don't have much left -- one bedroom and the hall. You can do it.

This here is exactly why no one should rent those machines! Here we have op cleaning crusty cat sh1t and piss. That same machine has probably cleaned human excrement, blood, a host of bodily secretions nd definitely vomit. Ew. Ew. Ew!

So people should just replace their carpets instead of cleaning them? Whether you rent the machine or hire cleaners who use a machine, the machine will have dealt with all of this stuff. They do clean the machines, you know.

The $200 I spent at Costco on my own upright Bissell carpet cleaner was well worth the money to me. It rarely gets used but it's there in a pinch and I don't have to have other people's crap in my house.
OP - I would consider having a professional come in next time if you can afford it. Sounds like it's worth the money to avoid the backache. Plus, I think their equipment is much more powerful than any portable carpet cleaner.

Who cleans them? Clerks at the grocery store? Op could have Hep C or norovirus in her house right now.

OP should replace the carpets, yes. There is nothing more vile than cat $h!t & pee. So disgusting. No way that place doesn't reek to high heaven.

Can you rent a dolly from a Uhaul place to make it easier for you to move the machine, OP? I also agree with the PP who suggested getting a carpet cleaner of your own - we have one that is about the same size as a vacuum and it was really handy when my kids were small and we had some big spills and accidents.

You are right - she should be sure not to lick or inject the carpet!

Make sure to use it a couple times per year, or loan it to a friend to use, otherwise you'll need repairs. We have a really good one and after not using for a couple years, and found that sitting unused and drying out is worse than wear and tear.

This doesn't help you today but this little machine works great for my pets/kids/muddy footprint messes on carpet -

I had an upright one but even that was cumbersome and got so gross and had to be store somewhere where it took up more room.

For whole room or house, I'd pay someone else next time. But for what you are describing - years of accumulated cat shit - yes, new carpets.

Oh, but dampening her carpet and running the cleaner blowing particles, etc into the air she's breathing isn't a good idea.

What's concerning is that op must've gotten used to the smell, considering she indicated the poo was dried onto the carpet. How do you not get a scraper, scrub brush and bleach and put them to use right after the cat sh@t on your rug? How did you live with the stench as it dried?

This OP has already posted that she can’t afford to replace the carpets.

OP a professional cleaner won’t do a much better job and imo won’t be able to go over the spots as many times as they should, because they won’t spend the time. Whereas if you rent a machine you can take breaks and then come back to the same area. But the main thing is they will do the labor. So if you can afford it, and you’re finding the machine to be too physically difficult, that would be a good option.

I would soak, fully soak, the areas in nature’s miracle the day before they arrive.

We hired a pro to do our carpets once, and rented a machine to do my dad's. The pro carpets looked MUCH better. I think the machines are fine if you are doing regular carpet grime, but for heavy duty, I'd call in the pros.
We found that with the rental machine, we had to go over the same areas over and over so the result wasn't streaky. It was tough work, and we were two people in our thirties.
