Does anyone know anything about the Junior League of Washington?

I am hearing very mixed things about the Junior League of Washington and want to know about the organization. For instance, what do they do and are they effective?

Okay, I have to say, I have lived in other major cities where the members seemed to strongly resemble each other (same exact hair color bottle) and really seemed to be in it for the socializing. I volunteered a lot on my own, but when running into them, they really didn't seem committed if they were on a project. It really consistently gave the institution a bad name. Maybe they have cleaned up their act in recent years.

I've heard that this is not a very active group in DC. You don't hear about them in the community.

Jr League is a MUST in the southern city where I am from. Had letters of rec lined up until I moved here, where it seemed like a non-entity. I was wondering the same.

All talk, no action. The Junior League in this town is all about political posturing within the orgnaization. They call themselves a volunteer organization, but all they do is promote themselves. Can anyone point to a recognizable community achievement?

I had a friend who quit because she felt discriminated against. The Junior League of Washington is not a reflection of this diverse community. You won't be included unless you are a member of a country club and send your children to private school.

This reminds me of some "without weight" organizations people belong here to so obviously pad their resume.

I have heard that this Washington league doesn't do much and that lots of the older ladies are mean as hell.

I quit because they didn't how to manage the money. I think about 20 cents of every dollar they raise goes to the community. That's it. Only 20 cents on the dollar. That's a poor track record for a non-profit.

They also discriminate if you disagree with them. Happened to several friends of mine.

What key projects do they have? That's my interest.

I have never heard of this. What is a junior league?
