MCPS does run a school bus from Franklin Knolls and Montgomery Knolls just across University to Blair. |
More than 2 miles, but less than 2.5 miles |
The neighborhoods along Darnestown Rd between Travilah and Muddy Branch are about 1.5 to 2 miles away. |
2.1 -2.5 miles from my map. If that neighborhood is rezoned to crown, Wootton district will not be continuous. |
Many of their friends would be going with them |
It's 2.2 miles on foot from the King Farm Safeway to Gaithersburg HS, and 3.2 miles to Richard Montgomery HS. Maybe you should discuss your reluctance with that PP who keeps lying about the proportion of Montgomery County residents who believe students should be assigned to the nearest school. It's 85 to 95% (depending on the area of the county) in support of attending the closest school. Almost no one would support sending kids another mile from home just to balance diversity. |
My point was that UMC white people are fleeing the system and being replaced by poor Hispanics, mainly immigrants. This article backs that up:. https://bethesdamagazine.com/january-february-2020/figuratively-speaking-12 31.1 – Percentage of students who are Hispanic/Latino (up from 13.9%) 27.7 – Percentage of students who are white (down from 51.9%) 33.3 – Percentage of students participating in free and reduced-price meals (up from 22.5% |
That article says exactly nothing about white people "fleeing the system." |
White student number have fallen like a rock in 20 years. How else should we interpret this? |
Percent of people under 18 in the US who were white/non-Hispanic in 2000: 61% Percent of people under 18 in the US who were white/non-Hispanic in 2020: 47% |
Demographics for the win! |
You sure do love hiding behind your percentages. However, these numbers back up my assertion that's white people are fleeing MCPS # white students in MCPS 2000 - 65,849 2005 - 58,780 2010 - 49,795 2015 - 47,331 2020 - 41,455 Total # MCPS kids 2000-2020 134,308 to 160,564 |
You don’t understand much about population dynamics. Yes, there may be fewer white students, but it’s not because people are “fleeing”. We are past the echo boom millennials being in school. Some neighborhoods (e.g. Derwood) have those empty nesters deciding to age in place. Thus not enough housing turnover for the children of those Boomers (young MC families) to purchase starter homes in MoCo. On the flip side, the birth rate for immigrant families and Hispanic families is comparatively high, and those 1st and 2nd generation families are still living in relatively dense housing. |
You don’t know much about moving with your feet, do you?

You could say that *all* of the students from 21 years ago have "fled" MCPS. |
