Tons of valid talking points. Most people won't be posting here, they will be taking it up in elections. |
So far, proposing to build affordable housing in my neighborhood (upper NW) is one of the first things Bowser has done that I wholeheartedly support, so yes, hopefully people will be taking this up in the election, and holding her to her promise to actually make this happen. |
Could you provide two examples, please? |
My issue is how they push it through and do something that could be done thoughtfully, horribly. That burns through a lot of good will. The new ward 3 homeless parking structure or whatever it is is hideous. |
+1 New York has tried every idea under the sun. |
Yep, the best solution is to continue to build livable walkable neighborhoods with lots of green space, and excellent transport. We should be devising new systems for this. Also lets take a look at immigration. Can we sustain so much new population or do we need to look at how many people our infrastructure can support? |
Hopefully none of these units will become brothels.
If Grosso/Allen’s legislation passes, a very real possibility. https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/835329.page |
Utopia now! |
When and where did NYC try this idea? |
There are still extensive areas in NYC with quite restrictive zoning. I follow some folks in NYC who discuss housing policy, and there is definitely debate going on there, its not like they have done everything they can, even with much higher demand than in DC. |
It's funny how people think these issues are new, as if no one has ever debated or tried them before. This stuff has been going on for a century. Google the Limited Dividend Housing Companies Act of 1926 or the National Housing Act of 1934. These ideas aren't new -- they're only new to you. |
The Homeless Shelter at Cathedral Commons. It’s tall and dense, just the way Greater Greater Washington wants it. |
Amen. That’s what PG County is for. |
Cleveland Park is basically all in an historic district. That makes it nearly impossible to upzone. |
What is Mayor Bow-wow’s plan to preserve the substantial stock of rent controlled housing in Ward 3? That is a huge source of existing affordable housing but the report doesn’t say anything about rent controlled housing. Ironically, upzoning could drastically reduce such housing stock. Methinks that her plan isn’t really about affordable housing. But it is most certainly about creating new big, dense and tall lucrative development opportunities in NW DC for Bowser’s developer friends. |
