Totally in agreemebt that this was not piblicized appropriately, and it does burn to think of the extra taxes on massages, gyms, exercise classes, and now this. But I think the fees will actually help make things less of a free for all. The pools may be more focused on swimming. I am a swimmer and avoid the pools in the summer months entirely bc of the lack of maintenance, dirty water, and unruly behavior. Maybe some of that unruly behavior will be diverted towards splash parks, and the pools will be better for swimming.

I guarantee all the vitriol is from one single wronged person. We also live in Ward 6 and I'm a big fan of Charles Allen. He is incredibly responsive and thoughtful, at least in the limited dealings I've had with him. And I haven't heard anything otherwise from neighbors or friends in Ward 6.

You must live in the right part of ward 6, he's done nothing but dump on my neighborhood.

Correction, allow Bowser and the Council to dump on my neighborhood, I think he just doesn't care about this part of town.

Completely agree with this statement except that he's done nothing for all of Ward 6.

I know he's not up for re-election, but can anyone from the Democratic Party run against him? He's totally out of his league.

I hate to see anything like this that discourages poor kids from using these nice facilities that are built because of gentrification.

Will they not consider income and provide a waiver to low income residents. To be honest, DC is the only place I've lived where so much free or low price stuff has been provided to its residents. Can you think of one locale that has free access to year round swimming? Of course going from zero to six hundred is a huge leap. They should have gradually priced this fee.

Yep, it was one of the best things about living here.

No, they weren't free; we pay one of the highest income taxes in the country. That's why the DCpress release saying the fees are still low for the area are insincere. It's not the $5 admission fee you need to judge it against. It's $5 plus the percentage of your income that is already being spent on the facility.

DPR is now tweeting that the pools and fitness centers will continue to be free for DC residents. Apparently the regs were focused on changes to the permit fees not admission fees. Too bad they didn't say this in the press release.

It shows what we can charge. Pools and fitness centers remain free to DC residents. Apologies for confusion. ^GC

Laughable that they think they can charge that much. And the posters that claimed a corporate grant ran out- did you just make that up? What's wrong with you.

They publish the fees and then waive them. That's what this means

It means this has been a waste of your time. Lots of hand wringing over nothing. AKA DCUM.

The email from DPR said there would be fees for rec usage. This was done in secret without community input. It was totally mishandled. We were all justifiably worried.

It is also illuminating to me to see how many people also feel that Charles Allen has been a failure for Ward 6.

I haven't posted previously, but I definitely remember it being advertised at Eastern Market pool that the pools were free do to the sponsorship of some bank. I forget which one. This was a couple summers ago though.
