LOL at this thread. On every other thread, DCUMers in the city are constantly posting about how they love "diversity" -- now we see the truth coming out. Hilarious.

600,000 people live in DC but just become some random crybaby on a message board whines about how they wanna go back home to Ohio, that's supposed to be some kind of meaningful, cross cutting trend or something? LOL!

And again, if folks are supposedly getting all this wonderful family support and all these wonderful extra helping hands and time from all these grandmas and aunts and cousins to help with the kids, then why do we constantly get told about how hard the home life of the poor is, how the kids can't get any support to help with school work, how there's no mentoring, no parenting, nobody has any time for the kids, nobody can take kids to the library or the museum, and how impossible it is to raise kids and work at the same time?

Again, if the family isn't helping, then what the fuck good is it all?

Or, if they are helping, then why do we constantly keep getting barraged with the constant whining and excuses?

It's either one or the other, and it's tiresome.

I guess the difference between you and me is that I don't have much as much patience for bullshit and I'm better at calling bullshit out when I hear it. You on the other hand sound more like the bleeding heart who just buys into these things without thinking - which is why things like multigenerational poverty just keep getting propagated on and on, rather than trying to break the cycle as it should be.

It's not diversity - it's the idea of deliberately upending successful neighborhood schools, and focusing ONLY on diversity as a possible solution to poor schools, that is disturbing here. I'm all in favor of diversity, and maybe even something like an expanded cluster on the Hill, or reserving 10% OOB for all schools to receive kids from failing schools ... but it really gets me that they have no respect at all for all the hard work Brent and other parents have done (even though I think the Brent obsession on the Hill is obnoxious!)

I don't think people are upset about accepting diversity in schools. It's this hamfisted crock of a plan from people who reject it for their own children that is upsetting.

There are other ways to encourage socioeconomic diversity. Rejecting a bad plan doesn't mean rejecting diversity.

But it's not about diversity. The author isn't giving solutions to a city-wide solution to diversity issues for DCPS and DCPCS, they have specifically chosen a few neighborhoods (diverse) and schools (diverse) and said we should change the demographics while ignoring WOTP schools and EOTR schools which are the least diverse schools in the city.

Before this thread derailed there was some good feedback. Has anyone written letters to the editor? I think we all should submit something to the wapo so it's clear that this article was far from consensus.

What does this plan do to a school like Tubman? It is one of only two DCPS schools city-wide with an Economically Disadvantaged all-students subgroup that exceeded 70% on the 2013 DC-CAS (the other being Hyde-Addison). That "subgroup" pretty much represents the entire school, which has very few OOB seats available in the early grades. If this plan is implemented, will higher SES families in the "controlled-choice" zone seek enrollment, supplanting seats from the low-SES IB families currently excelling there? Is that a good thing?

Charters maybe, but there's never been any love for diversity in DCPS.
