5/12 County Council Meeting -- Gutting MCPS Budget Request to the Tune of $180M

They go after things people get upset over so they get more funding but will do the cuts anyway.

No, every year they threaten to lay people off and then do not. Taylor says "this year is different" that's just more of the same theatrics

Did they pass the full budget request? I just logged in to watch the live and heard some thing along this line?

Many people whose positions would be eliminated under Taylor’s proposals could move into classroom positions because they are certified in multiple areas. It’s the media assistants and transportation folks that are pike be hurt. Most of them are not certified in any content area.

It's not official until next week but I believe they have finalized their plan and did their "straw vote" to verify they have enough votes-- if I understand correctly, they took $36M from the MCPS capital budget and shifted it to the MCPS operating budget to limit the MCPS operating budget cuts to $36M.

A $36M cut would mean the first two pages of cuts on the document that Taylor sent out earlier this week (assuming Taylor does not make any adjustments to his recommendations on where to cut from, and the Board of Ed does not make any adjustments either), but no cuts from pages 3-5.

It's not a cut. It is a lower increase than what they asked for.

So the middle school teachers and staff development teachers (and the full raises) will be saved, but all the other positions will still be cut? Media assistants, social workers, ECAs, pupil personel workers, college and career navigators, etc?

My guess is Taylor will come out and say "good news, turns out we don't need to cut these positions, isn't that awesome!"

Why isn't the Equity Department on the chopping block?

https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/equity/

In 2024 the 8 current members of the Equity Dept cost MCPS $1,107,810 in salary alone. And that was two years ago! I’m sure it’s even more now.

While I believe equity work is important work, these overpaid 8 are basically never seen or heard from in central office or in the schools they are purported to serve. They are working on "professional development" that the county could easily find online for free.

The title of this thread is a joke. How is 180,000,000 gutting $3,490,000,000.

Good luck with that.

My guess is MCPS and other county agencies could easily find several million that taxpayers simply shouldn't be funding. There are many things that get funded just because someone knows the right person or for purely performative reasons. That will help but will not address fundamental structural issues due to the compensation choices the council makes every year

they are going to get the funding. if not all 140 mil of it.

It's a cut from their planned budget, of which many of the increases are linked to inflation and mostly or entirely unchangeable. They can't just magically get by on the money from last year without something being cut. Not that it has to be Taylor's list, but some things genuinely do need to be cut.

I have had several trainings with them this year and they also teach PDO courses. Maybe we don't need 8, I honestly don't know, but to target a small department serving over 100 schools over a combined total of 1 mil dollars isn't fair either. Many of those have been with mcps for over a decade and have helped schools start programs like NPFH, ADL, and others. They are also responsible for submitting grants to the state for curriculum and programs.

So which positions are being eliminated? I find this all confusing.
