Stephen Colbert’s show cancelled?

So, I'm not personally mourning the end of Colbert, but it's pretty obvious that Paramount is caving to Trump and using ratings as a fig leaf. That said, as a lifelong Dem, I hope we don't allow this bright shiny object to distract us from the really horrible stuff that Trump is doing to destroy our soul as a nation -- not to mention our economy. Playing culture wars games against Trump and MAGA is not a winning strategy.

He's taking over the Supreme Court, legislative control of spending, and the media. Just one of those should alarm every American.

Totally!

His show couldn’t possibly be getting cancelled because it loses $40 million a year. Nope, that’s not it. Has to be something to do with Trump. Never change, DCUM.

Right? These old guys are unfunny progressive state propaganda hacks. Colbert used to be very clever and witty — but now he’s just an insufferable holier than thou dweeb. Honestly get a closeted gay vibe from him as well.

Literal state propaganda. Operation mockingbird.

Wow his body language!

More like 20,000,000. I switched back and forth between Colbert and Kimmel every night.

No way you are younger than 65. This is classic 1995 TV habit.

My college kids/young adults and middle age spouse spend hours in the evenings watching funny stuff and comedy sketches on youtube.

None of them watch the evening late night shows or really network anything, except for sports. Otherwise, it is youtube and netflix.

Most of the adults in my age bracket don't watch those shows any more. They are too snide and overtly political. People, even most moderate liberals, want to laugh and escape, not watch one more negative political show. The 20 somethings and teens don't even know who these guys are (Colbert, etc) They just see them as boring lectury old guys that are irrelevant.

They do watch Conan though on whatever online streaming he has. They think he is really funny and witty. He doesn't do politics though. I think he is still just silly witty humor.

Those late night network shows, including SNL, are stuck in some weird hybrid of 1996 TV culture combined with the crazy hyper political partisan preachy culture of the past 5-8 years.

They are not fun to watch and have lived out their time.

No one with critival thinking skills or taste watches that man

In addition to losing $40m per year, cable companies are losing subscribers at a record rate. Young people are streaming their shows - not watching cable.

If Colbert’s show was making money or even breaking even, it wouldn’t be cancelled. Always follow the money trail. In this case, the money trail led to a deep hole.

+1
The $40 million/year losses have been reported everywhere, across the board. It was a financial decision. So typical for the usuals at DCUM to make it into a political conspiracy theory.

The problem is the show just became an I hate Trump program and that turns off more than half of the country. More men watch late night anyway and they are not buying what is being sold. The last skit on the fake Melania was plain mean spirited. No way they would be done to Michele Obama. Colbert used to be funny but he just became bitter and mean. John Carson is never to be replaced. He understood that his role is not politics. These late night guys could learn something. Kimmel will be the next to go. He just goes on and on and on and not funny.

What are you on about? With all the vitriol, nastiness and hateful rhetoric hurled at Michelle Obama, you are crying about a fake Melania skit? Please.
