No, actually you do, but you like your false version better. It wouldn't exist but for the fact that FCPS was experiencing declining enrollment in the mid-80s. FCPS's initial plan was to close one of Annandale, Jefferson, or Stuart (just as multiple elementary and middle schools, and Fort Hunt HS were closed in that era). The Mason District representative on the School Board was always from Stuart back then, and wanted to keep it open, so the question was whether Annandale or Jefferson would close. Annandale was an older school with a more established reputation (and had been a football powerhouse) so Jefferson ended up the school on the chopping block. After it was already clear Annandale or Jefferson would close as a community school, the local political powers and business leaders got the idea of turning Jefferson into a STEM magnet rather than simply shuttering its doors. It wasn't to meet any specific academic void in FCPS at the time so much as to help market Fairfax County to West Coast defense contractors looking to establish an East Coast presence during the Reagan/Bush era. And so TJHSST was born. It may have evolved into something "better," but TJHSST originally had at least as much to do with marketing and PR as academics. And it wasn't all good; as indicated earlier closing Jefferson as a neighborhood high school actually contributed to the decline of the surrounding neighborhoods and schools. |
How come people who care about STEM don't know that US News changed the calculations significantly over the years? What the rankings value has changed. |
I was going to criticize this person's representation of the history behind TJ as well, but then I went through the school board minutes from 1984 and it turns out they're actually not wrong. The first mention of a magnet school I can find is on January 26th, 1984 (https://insys.fcps.edu/schoolboardapps/ArchivedSBMinutes/1980-1989/1980-1984/1984/19840126r.pdf), where it's proposed (pg. 138) as a solution to falling school enrollments due to the boomers aging out of the school system. At the top of pg. 140, there's also a mention of a school board member who didn't believe a magnet school would be helpful for that purpose. By February 9th (https://insys.fcps.edu/schoolboardapps/ArchivedSBMinutes/1980-1989/1980-1984/1984/19840209r.pdf) we see a mention of a "proposed School for Science and Technology" at Annandale HS (pg. 149). The location selection appears to have been controversial, and they seem to have considered Falls Church, Marshall, and Stuart/Justice as well before settling on Jefferson sometime before June 13th (https://insys.fcps.edu/schoolboardapps/ArchivedSBMinutes/1980-1989/1980-1984/1984/19840613r.pdf, pg. 68). It seems like FCPS also had a trend of increasingly close relationships with local industry, and they formed an industry advisory council in keeping with that (https://insys.fcps.edu/schoolboardapps/ArchivedSBMinutes/1980-1989/1980-1984/1984/19840524r.pdf, pg. 246). Basically, TJ was the result of both FCPS struggling to keep its schools open in the wake of declining enrollments and trying to cozy up with local high-tech industry. You can disagree about whether the school is a net positive (I think it is), but the history isn't wrong in this case. |
DP. That has always been the reason for TJ's creation. I'm not sure what competing explanation you think has been defeated by your post? This is why it was created, and it's fine, not a bad or embarrassing or shameful reason. |
TJ's 2024 rank fell from its 2023 rank because of SOL failures. |
I was agreeing with 15:23. |
I just hate liars who misrepresent the truth and push RWNJ propaganda. |
I am very pro-testing but Bonitatibus did try to reduce stress, but I don't think the stress went down because of anything she did (unless you consider her role in the change in admission process). The stress went down when the weaker students showed up to fill up the bottom half of the grading curve. The A students weren't as stressed about getting good grades and the B students were stressed about trying to get As. The C students were having a hard time and i don't think they should have been encouraged to "gut it out" but their presence did alleviate the stress for the B students. They can relax their grading posture so that these kids get the grade they would have gotten if they had stayed at their base schools. This would make TJ much less stressful and more attractive to all students. One of the biggest considerations made when accepting a offer to go to TJ is how it will affect your GPA. |
It's not that east to find outside of FCPS either. |
Failing the SOL? WTF?!?!? The number of failing SOLs is like less than 10% |
I like Cao but he's solid right, not center right. I am center right. He is noticably to the right of me. |
That’s exactly what the liberals on this forum do. They demonize Asian as being being robots with zero creativities, etc. Why are all FCPS Regeneron winners Asians if they don’t have any creativity? The liberal hate on Asians on this forum is insane and encouraged. |
It is acceptable and even encouraged to discriminate against asians |
Thanks for proving my point. Literally no one said that. You are just trying to stir sht up with lies and propaganda; that’s all the RWNJs know how to do. |
