You clearly know nothing about how Hollywood works, of business for that matter. They had a deal when her book wasn't working. Then it took off. They both benefited. Of course he would retain the rights. |
These are two separate issues. RR has the clout to be able to do what he wants in a movie he is involved with at this point in his career. That he is BL's DH doing the rewriting, sure, could make her look bad. But my guess is that the scene wasn't working and RR and BL worked together to figure out a way to make the scene work. He did not rewrite "the movie." He also did a big campaign video for her that got a lot of attention for the video and for the movie. No way she said no to that either. Her objective is to have a successful movie, and on her own it wasn't happening. Certainly hadn't happened as pretty much everything she did post Gossip Girls has not come close to succeeding. RR has had an eye for what works in the current marketplace, so why not take advantage of that. RR helped this movie succeed, along with the books cult following. |
His money invested in the film gives him a role. And if you think BL wasn't thrilled to have him help her make the movie succeed you are just a man-hater. This was BL's first movie post kids. She has had no successes since Gossip Girls. It was almost as if she said to RR, It's my turn to work again, and I need a success, and RR did everything in his power to make it happen for her. |
Would it have been better that he dropped her and hurt his back? |

What do you mean this is her first role post Kids? This was her first role after having her fourth kid, but she has been a mom for the past nine years and has done several movies since having kids. You’re right that she hasn’t had much success, though I think A Simple Favor did pretty well. That was mostly an Anna Kendrick movie, but she did costar. I think her Betty buzz nonalcoholic and alcoholic drinks are not doing that great and it’s likely her hair care line will not work. Her lifestyle company Preserve also flopped. Celebrity brands that work usually require a lot of attention and care from the celebrity. See Jen garners organic farm snacks for kids, the Olsen twins fashion company and GOOP. They are all heavily involved. Blake seems like she has started 4 different businesses and ignores them all. |
I mean, post being pregnant. It feels very much like, Okay, I am done having OUR kids (I should have been clearer) and now it's my turn to be a success again. So RR, IMO, has worked hard to make sure this first venture is a success for her. Since they married and started having kids, RR's career and investments have skyrocketed. I doubt he was home much sharing parenting duties. Don't they have 4 kids?? Anyway, I'm not a huge BL fan, anyway, but even I can see how she starts a lot of things, none of them worked, and being a mom of 3 and now 4 little ones makes it hard when the dad is gone a lot jet-fueling his own career. All to say, I feel that RR is doing anything he can to get this movie to work for BL, because she clearly hasn't been able to do it on her own -- for whatever reason. I feel as if even all the Taylor Swift girl's nights have been part of BL rebranding/relaunching. "I'm still young and hot and a movie star hanging out with TS!" So I have zero problem with RR the DH stepping in to help. And as I also mentioned, RR the hugely successful business person absolutely is going to step in for separate reasons. (Though no way he ever would have been involved with this movie had it not been for his wife. I would venture to say that they were headed for another failure--beyond a certain subset of rabid book fans--when RR got involved.) |
P.S. A Simple Favor did 53.5M in total ticket sales domestically. (97M worldwide.) All to say it didn't do well. |
I am most certainly not a man-hater. He wasn't the director or screen writer. How do we know RR invested $ into the movie? I have not read that anywhere, but I am also not actively reading everything either, this just seems to be all over the place rn. BL is a producer and sometimes actors are given a producer credit even when not investing $ into the film. Not saying that happened here as BL allegedly was very involved, but if she was the producer why was RR also involved? If my husband of 12+ years started taking over, it would not be a positive. Check out Ask a Manager and you'll read stories of spouses occasionally doing similar things and people are horrified! Yes, partners talk and brainstorm, but in no way would he come in and rewrite something. I am an investor and not up in the businesses every day! I don't know what happened, but it is unfortunate that some of these adults can't act like grown ups and old it together for a few weeks and focus on DV. Also, what is up with all this unfollowing? Doesn't anyone know how to use mute? Just mute the person and don't see their stories and posts. Did they really have no clue that unfollowing him would cause so much drama? Just mute the person and if you must unfollow do it down the road. |
I'm the PP, and I agree with many of your points. I'm only saying that for RR to be/get involved is not unheard of by a long shot in Hollywood. And I think BL caused the problems by talking about him rewriting "a" scene that was important to her character, and tons of people reacted badly to that. Basically, I really think the whole thing would have bombed had RR not stepped in. That is separate from actors and writers being immature and not focusing on the issue of DV--which is a shame. |
Then be a supportive spouse and the primary parent. Take a backseat. Trust your partner. I also am not a huge fan of people with "more power" coming and taking over, gives me the ick. Until recently (maybe because of backlash) the only person talking about DV was Justin. Everyone else was making it sound like a rom com or trying to peddle their hair care line and drinks. |
I haven't been to the website, but there is a difference is in what has been done. BL never should have said RR worked on the scene. It's like a woman who does an interview and says my DH helped me work on a spreadsheet for work. (That's probably not a perfect example.) As you said, partners frequently brainstorm ideas. But you don't then go tell the world that your partner helped you, as if your work partner wasn't good enough. Frankly, I just think BL is challenged in many ways. |
You're sort of making my point. There is no reason to trust that BL could do this on her own. She hasn't been able to. So, because he cares and wants her to succeed and not have ANOTHER flop he steps in to help. Also separately, and unfortunately, a female centric movie about DV is not going to succeed. |
It might be because he cares. I’ve also heard he is extremely controlling. He might not be able to help himself. |
It sounds like RR was very involved. BL states that and JB said something about RR involvement in a respectful way. Most people wouldn't have their boss (in this case the JB, Director) talking about someone's spouse working on their job? IMHO JB was respectful and kind about it, but most people would think a spouse doing that was controlling/codependent/major issue. There is a huge difference between brainstorming and actually rewriting work. Red flags all over the place. |
I read the book awhile ago and thought it was okay for a quick read. I tried to read the sequel (It Starts with Us) more recently and couldn’t get through it. Personally, I haven’t seen the movie, but when I found out Blake Lively was cast as Lily my immediate reaction was that she’s too old. In the book Lily Bloom is a recent college graduate in her early 20s — not mid-30s. It seems like Colleen Hoover has been all-in on Blake but as a reader this seemed like an odd choice to me. |
