Shouldn't university be free for some students?

Kids are expensive. Why not just make everything free? Why stop at college?

Don't make it free.

Make it equal price for everyone.

+1 everyone should get same price.

Imagine if we charged different prices for cars, houses, etc. based on an individual’s background. This is what colleges are doing.

We do charge different rents with vouchers

Right, poor kids shouldn’t go to school. They should just dig ditches & work in Amazon warehouses all day starting in K.

K-12 could charge tuition and only be free for the truly needy.

Which would result in most kids not going to school because their parents didn’t feel like paying.

College is expensive. When nobody’s having kids anymore because it’s too expensive to raise them you’ll be shaking your head wondering why.

Parents are supposed to pay for college. The entire financial aid system is based on this idea. It has been this way for a loooong time.

Which is wrong. Why is an adult supposed to pay for another adults' stuff

Sure however everyone here should know this before having kids.

You are awfully sheltered. Kids have no control over who they are born to.

Sheltered? People who have kids should expect the associated costs including college.

So what should happen to kids whose parents did not? The kids have no control over that.

What happens to any kid with bad parents? No easy solution.

If you mean home school, that is already a thing.

Public school isn’t a full solution but is very close.

There are lots of easy solutions, actually.

All parents at a minimum should be prepared to pay in-state tuition.

Reparations are such a ridiculous idea.

Any identity group that was harmed by government policy at some point in the distant past now effectively gets to confiscate the wealth of other identity groups for their own enrichment? You know who also got screwed by the “system”- families who lost their fathers, brothers and sons in various wars? Why don’t we send those families reparations?

We are on a path to civil war if we persist with this illogical mode of thought where the descendants of one group owe something to the descendants of another. I don’t owe black people anything and they need to keep their hands out of my pocket. And they owe me nothing.

I kind of agree with this. What about all women? Women have been institutionally marginalized and discriminated against for centuries. Where’s my free education and reparations?

NP. Just coming here to say this ^^. I'm a woman and don't want "reparations." Where does all of this end?

I don’t want a permanent, uneducated underclass.
