I would agree. I also think it’s tragic that this hasn’t ALWAYS been the case. |
And can you imagine that that someone might have had qualities, experiences, and even stats that you’re not aware of — that mattered more than yet another “top 10” student at your HS? Being top 10, even from Exeter, isn’t necessarily going to make an application stand out — although if that student is 1st Gen, many would take a second look. |
Yes i can imagine that. But he was not recognized for his academics nor were his extracurriculars particularly notable. His only notable attribute was he was non white/non asian. Hence he got into multiple top ivy schools vs. the top 10 all went to lesser ivys, duke etc.. very good schools but not top ivys. Hence the "thumb on the scale" comments. If you think giving people a leg up because of race is fine then just say it. Most would not agree |
Look up "hence." |
How do these applicants feel when they lie about who they are and still don't get in? I am SO curious to know.

Unless they want a fight on their hands. They will get sued for discrimination once it is discovered that one of the students' parents are black or Native American. Universities know better than to discriminate against mixed race people especially Native Americans. It doesn't matter what the percentage is or the student's phenotype. Universities don't want to have this fight. There are too many mixed race and multiracial students in this country. If anything, the mixed race child will be welcome with open arms because that child is a representation of diversity and multiculturalism. Being multiracial is a hook and not a disadvantaged in college admissions. A multiracial student will be used for the university's brochures, promotional videos, prospective student college tours, etc. Not only would they admit the student that student will be place on a pedestal as utilized as a prop. |
I think the fallacy is the assumption that the check box translates into a boost in admissions. It takes a program like Questbridge to get a the boost. The check box is just a formality and does nothing. |
Lol. |
I hear our former president's son plans to check to the incorrect box.
Apparently his father told him orange is the new black. |
Why would there be a fight? The university will not tell the applicant they were denied because of the photo and they don't believe the student is the race claimed. They will be rejected and no one will be the wiser. |
What do you mean you "suspect"? |
How is that really any different than the white kid who claims they are deeply interested in transforming some XYZ social issue, interned at an inner city organization for a number of years, indicates a major with a social justice career goal than immediately embarks on a finance major once into a T10 school? |
According to College Board, one must be 1/4 (one hispanic grandparent will accomplish this). |
How does one handle a child adopted into a Hispanic family who does not have Hispanic birth parents? I imagine that the adopted child could e considered Hispanic purely based on his/her upbringing and having parents with Hispanic heritage. |
